You’ve Lost Your Mind

Those are the words that I’m sure go through my husband’s head any time I get on my natural body products soapbox. If given the chance, I’ll tell anybody listening about the harmful effects of fragrances, deodorant, or really any body product.

Low Tox Personal Care Swaps: Clean

Shampoo

This was a serious struggle, when switching to natural products. I could not find a shampoo that I liked and that didn’t leave my hair greasy. The Everyone Soap 3 in 1 is a winner. I’ll often find it at TJ Maxx. My favorite is the Vanilla + Lavender scent.

Body Wash

I personally find that castile soap is the perfect soap for just about everything. Hands, body, dishes, you name it. I like to use Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap so that I can use some essential oils to make it do whatever I need it to be. In this case body wash!

Face Soap

I will take some unscented castile soap and essential oils to make my own foaming face soap. With the right pump any soap can be a foaming soap, but it works without the foaming pump too. I’ve found it keeps acne at bay and doesn’t dry out my skin.

Astringent
Witch hazel is the base of a lox tox astringent. I’m not loyal to a brand, so I’ll scan whatever is on sale at TJ Maxx with the EWG app. Thayer’s is a brand that I know to be clean. Then I’ll add some oils and cotton balls so the astringent is ready to use each morning.

Toothpaste

I no longer use toothpaste except on my retainers. Tooth powder has become my preferred way to clean those pearly whites. What sold me on the idea was that my sensitivity totally disappeared. No toothpaste, no pain. You can even make your own tooth powder!

Low Tox Personal Care Swaps: Moisturize

Hand Lotion

It is very easy to make up a moisturizing lotion bar. My working hands recipe has become very popular with my family. It is often requested for Christmas. With a few ingredients you can have several bars perfect to keep next to every sink.

Conditioner

Coconut oil is the winner here as well. I’ll rub it in my damp hair and then run a brush through it. It may be simple, but it works.

Face Cream

The hands down winner here is the Frankincense Tallow Balm from Toups & Co. I use it every single day. If you prefer a bit of sun protection in your face cream, then try the Sun Balm. I use and love both. They don’t leave my skin feeling oily and aren’t heavy on the skin.

Anti-Aging

Toups and Co has a Reparative Serum that is made to help with aging. It has amino acids and bakuchiol to help keep your face looking as young as you feel.

Beard Oil

Beard oil is so simple to make that it’s almost not worth running to the store to buy. In fact, if you already make personal care products at home, you probably already have the ingredients.

Deodorant

I have made my own deodorant and tried several clean brands. I discovered that deodorants containing coconut oil stained my clothes. Think permanent pit stains. Toups & Co has a tallow based deodorant that I love. It lasts all day and doesn’t leave pit stains.

Bath Bombs

Bath bombs are so fun to make that I wouldn’t consider purchasing them. You can make any shape, color, or scent that you like. They make great gifts, but are also fun to make with kids.

Shaving Cream

Although a bit of castile soap works just fine on its own, shaving cream is nice to have. When I feel the need for such luxury I’ll make up some foaming shaving cream. It works great and helps to moisturize the skin. And it is much cheaper to make at home than to buy at the store.

Acne

Did you know that oftentimes acne medication encourages the acne to come back? So instead I use a roller bottle that does away with the little devils and threatens them to never come back.

Armpit Mask

Sometimes it’s nice to take a bit of extra time for self care. Perhaps those pits are extra smelly since making the switch to natural deodorant. An armpit mask only takes 2 ingredients to make and will help keep you from smelling like onions.
