Sandal Feet
Whenever the weather gets warmer, the toes come out. I have always run around barefoot and have no intentions of stopping anytime soon. My Mama had a rule that to go outside you had to put your shoes on or take your socks off. I always took my socks off. Nowadays, my husband laughs when I take my shoes off to go outside. That is to say, I have a lifetime of calluses on the soles of my feet. I am convinced that the bottoms of my feet are equivalent to the soles of a shoe. Though functional, it isn’t so cute to wear sandals when people can see your callused heels.
On the other hand my mom refuses to wear sandals until her feet are sandal feet. This means that her calluses are gone, her toes are painted, and her heels feel like a baby’s bottom. Then and only then is she willing to wear sandals out in public. Certainly, she’d be ashamed to wear sandals with my leathery soles. But to each his own.
Despite our differences in sandal feet, we both love this DIY foot butter. Whether my feet are dry in the winter or cracked in the summer, this foot butter makes everything silky smooth and hydrated.

About the DIY Foot Butter
I use jojoba oil in this recipe because it absorbs into the skin better than coconut oil. Although, If you prefer coconut oil, expect a greasier product. I would reduce the amount by about half if using coconut oil.
Shea butter helps to moisturize the skin. I like the smell and texture of it more than I do cocoa butter. I don’t fancy chocolate smelling feet myself, but if that’s your thing be my guest. In short, they are interchangeable in this recipe.
The vitamin E oil is a great moisturizer. You will see it in many commercially produced moisturizers as well. This helps to rehydrate the skin and soften the calluses.
Arrowroot powder absorbs some of the oil to make the DIY foot butter less greasy. I don’t like to feel like a greased hog, so I add it to all of my DIY butters.
Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. This oil will help get rid of the yuck on your feet. Cracked heels are often caused by the microscopic yuck on your feet. Tea tree oil should help.
Eucalyptus essential oil also has antibacterial properties to help with the foot yuck that you can’t see lurking under your socks. It will also help with any itchiness caused by dry skin.
Peppermint essential oil has antibacterial and antiseptic properties to help as well. It causes a cooling sensation that can be soothing for tired feet.
Lavender essential oil is the jack of all trades. It is soothing to the feet. Plus it smells great, which is a benefit when talking about feet.

Using the DIY Foot Butter
This foot butter is best used before bedtime. It will be too greasy to use before putting on sandals. If you are wearing socks and shoes, it would be ok. Just don’t go barefoot on hard floors after applying it or you may slip. I may know from experience. This foot butter works wonderfully after a nice foot bath as well. Tips for Storing the DIY Foot Butter
If your house is warm then this foot butter will melt sitting at room temperature. During the summer months I keep this foot butter in the refrigerator to prevent it from becoming a liquidy mess.
Sunlight causes essential oils to lose their effectiveness over time. Consequently, it is best to store them out of direct sunlight. I would suggest keeping this DIY foot butter in the vanity or medicine cabinet where it is dark.
In addition, it is best not to store essential oils in plastic. They will cause it to deteriorate. Therefore, I recommend storing essential oil products in glass. I love the way mason jars look and they are so versatile.
