In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the toilet bowl cleaner, dusting spray, mouthwash, lotion, and bug spray. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another example was the smell of clean laundry. I love the smell of clean laundry, so I found an essential oil blend to use on the wool dryer balls to replace that smell. I still have a few things left to replace, but over time I’ve slowly learned how to clean without toxic chemicals.

About the Ingredients in DIY Foaming Face Wash
Castile soap is an all-natural, vegetable-based soap concentrate. The oils used in castile soap are all from plants. It is my go-to soap for all things around the house. It cleans dishes and people and works well for both. If you want to learn more about castile soap I did a whole blog post about it here.
Using distilled water will help your products to last longer. Distilled water doesn’t have the bacteria that can cause mold growth. If I don’t have distilled water on hand, I just use some from the Berkey. So far I’ve not had any problems.
Vitamin E oil helps to moisturize the skin. We’ve all grown up hearing about how we need to moisturize our faces so that we can be beautiful old ladies right?. No? Just me? Ok well now I’m telling you.

Oil Combinations for DIY Foaming Face Wash
You may recognize these oil blends as being the same as the ones I use in the DIY facial astringent. That’s because I like to keep things simple. By using the same oils for anything going on my face, I don’t have to remember a hundred different recipes. Plus when something works, I don’t go trying to fix it.
Oily Skin
5 drops each: Cedarwood, Vetiver, Ylang-Ylang
Cedarwood is great for oily skin and is an antiseptic. The early Egyptians used it in their cosmetics. Vetiver is cleansing and it helps with aging and oily skin. Ylang-ylang cleanses the skin and helps oily skin.
Dry Skin
5 drops each: Lavender, Patchouli, Helichrysum
Lavender is good for acne, acts as a cleanser, and reduces itchiness and inflammation. Patchouli has cleansing properties, but also helps with dry flaky skin. Helichrysum can help with aging and dry skin. It cleanses and reduces inflammation as well.
Breakouts
5 drops each: Tea Tree, Lavender, Lemongrass
Tea tree helps with acne. It is good for oily skin, which may increase breakouts.Plus is also cleansing which gets rid of the bad stuff that causes breakouts. Lavender is good for acne, acts as a cleanser, and reduces inflammation. Lemongrass cleans away the pimple causing germs and reduces inflammation. Some people are sensitive to it though, so make sure to test it out before rubbing it all over your face.
Sensitive
5 drops each: Rose, Chamomile, Frankincense
Rose has anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties. It is also calming and soothing to the skin. Chamomile is one of the very gentle oils. It helps with breakouts, dry skin, inflammation, and gently cleanses the skin. Frankincense is gentle on the skin, but can help with aging skin and has cleansing properties.
Everyday
5 drops each: Lavender, Frankincense, Tea Tree
Lavender is good for acne and acts as a cleanser. Frankincense helps with aging skin and also has cleansing properties. I love frankincense and put it in most everything going on my body. Tea tree helps with acne, oily skin, and is also cleansing. This blend covers all the bases and is my personal favorite.

Do you have to shake to reincorporate the oils with each use? Hoping to make things as simple as possible for my daughters.
morgansfarmhouse says
You do not have to shake each time, just when you notice things starting to separate. I don’t notice the oils separate, but the soap and water do try.
