Natural Dusting Spray

Are you trying to switch to more natural cleaners? Ditch the Pledge and give this natural dusting spray a try. I promise you’ll love it and never go back. It’s safe enough that even a child could use it to dust. I use it on all of the wooden furniture in the house. Combined with a good microfiber cloth the dusting can be done in no time.

In With the Good

A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.

Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.

After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.

Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another example was the smell of clean laundry. I love the smell of clean laundry, so I found an essential oil blend to use on the wool dryer balls to replace that smell. I still have a few things left to replace, but over time I’ve slowly learned how to clean without toxic chemicals.

About the Natural Dusting Spray

Using water in a recipe tends to make it spoil faster. By using distilled water this spray will last longer. You can either purchase some or boil tap water. Make sure it cools before you put it in the glass jar.

Vinegar helps this natural dusting spray get the grime off. Since switching to natural cleaners, I’ve found that I go through a lot more vinegar than ever before. It’s great for cleaning almost everything. Go ahead and buy the big jug. You’re going to need it.

Olive oil is used to help repel dust. I find it also helps to soften the rough wood on some of the furniture my husband built. Other oils can be used in place of olive oil, just as long as they are liquid at room temperature. Fractionated coconut oil, avacodo oil, or jojoba oil are all good options.

The orange essential oils are optional, but add a lovely smell. My husband can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so adding essential oils helps to lessen the smell and his complaints. You can adjust the amount to match the preferences of your family. I like to use wild orange in this recipe, but any orange or lemon oil should work just fine. Both orange and lemon oils will help to clean the surfaces being dusted. That’s always a bonus in my book.

20 drops of orange essential oils

Instructions

  1. First pour the distilled water and white vinegar into a glass spray bottle.

  4. Now it’s time to get cleaning.

Using the Natural Dusting Spray

This natural dusting spray is perfect for a deep cleaning or a light dusting. With so little oil, you can spray it more liberally than you would something like Old English.

Do make sure to test a small inconspicuous area before spraying it all over. I’ve not had any problems yet. I do not recommended using this on raw wood though.
