In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another example was the smell of clean laundry. I love the smell of clean laundry, so I found an essential oil blend to use on the wool dryer balls to replace that smell. I still have a few things left to replace, but over time I’ve slowly learned how to clean without toxic chemicals.

About the Homemade Toilet Cleaning Bombs
Baking soda is a standard ingredient in most natural cleaners. It is alkaline which helps it to remove stains and grime. Plus it deodorizes, which makes it perfect for the potty if you catch what I mean.
Citric acid causes the homemade toilet cleaning bombs to fizz, when put in the water. It comes from lemons and limes and is used in many commercial cleaners as well. Like lemon oil, it can be used to help disinfect surfaces. This fizzing agent helps remove the visible dirt and the invisible germs.
The castile soap and Protect cleaner concentrate help get the toilet bowl clean and hold the bombs together.
The essential oils boost cleaning power. I like to use citrus oils like lemon or orange. If I’m using a blend, thieves is the primary choice.
Homemade Toilet Cleaning Bombs Recipe
Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
¼ cup citric acid
1 tablespoon castile soap
½ teaspoon Protect concentrate
30 drops essential oils
Instructions
- First mix together one cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of citric acid in a medium mixing bowl.
- Then slowly add in one tablespoon of castile soap and ½ teaspoon of Protect concentrate. This will fizz up, so go slowly. A spray bottle works great for this. The mixture should be wet enough to hold its shape, but not soaking wet.
- Next mix in 30 drops of essential oils.
- Then comes the messy part. Press the mixture into silicone molds or bath bomb molds. I’ve found that silicone ice cube trays or muffin tins work best. This is most easily done with your hands, then packed with the back of a spoon.
- Allow the homemade toilet cleaning bombs to dry. This takes about 24 hours. They may continue to fizz while they dry. Continue packing them down with the spoon. They will eventually stop fizzing. Pop them out and keep them in an airtight jar.
Using Homemade Toilet Cleaning Bombs
To use the homemade toilet cleaning bombs, just drop one in the toilet bowl and let it fizz. When I clean the bathroom, I put a cleaning bomb in the toilet before cleaning the sink and mirror. This allows it time to work before I’m ready to scrub the toilet. When the fizzing stops, take a toilet brush and scrub the bowl. I like to follow this up by spraying some peroxide in the bowl to disinfect it as well. Then flush it all away.
