In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another example was the smell of clean laundry. I love the smell of clean laundry, so I found an essential oil blend to use on the wool dryer balls to replace that smell. I still have a few things left to replace, but over time I’ve slowly learned how to clean without toxic chemicals. Come along as I teach you how to detox your laundry routine!

How to Detox Your Laundry Routine: Stains
One of the biggest stain struggles is keeping my whites white. Luckily my mom taught me how to detox this part of the laundry routine years ago. She had taught me how to wash my karate uniform to keep it looking white instead of a nasty yellow. Bluing is nontoxic and biodegradable. Using bluing actually makes my whites look whiter than they do when I use bleach. Just remember that a little goes a long way.
When something has a grease stain, I rub it with a stick of chalk. The chalk absorbs the grease and the shirt looks brand new. Baking soda can also work. I don’t notice the grease until the shirt is washed and dried, I’ll iron over the grease with a paper towel underneath. I managed to use this trick to get out the stain from spilling candle wax on my shirt.
For other stains, I turn to hydrogen peroxide or vinegar. I’ve even been known to get a toothbrush and scrub it in when needed. For fresh stains, I reach for cold water and some castile soap. A little elbow grease seems to be the trick most of the time.
How to Detox Your Laundry Routine: Washing
I have tried just about every homemade laundry soap recipe on Pinterest. I haven’t found any that I just love. Liquid, powder, and pods none of it seems to get the job done. So I gave Revive’s laundry soap a try. It worked just like Tide, but so much cleaner. There are no fragrances, no dyes, no parabens, no phosphates, and no chlorine. It gets the clothing clean without any of the bad stuff. It was a perfect detox swap!
How to Detox Your Laundry Routine: Drying
This laundry detox came in three stages. It started by using a drying rack in the house. I figured I was paying to heat the house, so I might as well use that heat to dry the clothes too. This worked and I still use it often in the winter time. But it’s not quick. Depending on how full the rack is, sometimes it takes 24 hours to get everything dry.
Then I read about all of the chemicals in dryer sheets. I knew that they had to go, but there was a hang up. I’m in love with the smell of clean laundry and didn’t want to give that up. I needed a replacement. I tried a DIY laundry scent booster. It worked great, but I really wanted something for the dryer too. I wanted all the good laundry smells. I switched to using wool dryer balls and lavender essential oil from Revive. It was great, but it didn’t give me that clean laundry smell that I wanted. Then I found Revive’s Tumble and Tidy blend. Using wool dryer balls and Tumble and Tidy was the laundry detox switch I needed to get the smell that I wanted.
Most recently, we got a clothesline outside. I fell in love. Nothing can beat the smell of line dried laundry. It was quicker than the dryer rack. Cheaper than the dryer. And best of all it made me feel like Ma Ingalls. This has become my favorite laundry detox swap.
