Scrub the Stink Off!
I love seafood! Nothing beats boiled shrimp dipped in cocktail sauce. I am not scared to dig into a bowl of peel and eat shrimp. In fact, Mama Susie used to give me peel and eat shrimp for my birthday. The only time I feel regret after enjoying these shrimp is when I go to bed and tuck my hands under my head. It smells like a fishing boat! This easy, homemade hand scrub is the perfect solution. I keep a jar of lemon hand scrub in the kitchen for just such rendezvous.
It also works wonders on onion or garlic hands. After I am done chopping and cooking, I can scrub my hands with the lemon hand scrub to get rid of the smell. I love the smell of food, just not on my hands all evening. My husband and cat appreciate my use of the lemon hand scrub as well.
If smelly hands aren’t your problem, then I suggest trying the soothing skin hand scrub. I have terrible dry skin all year. Being a teacher means that I spend a lot of time in the bathroom washing my hands and use hand sanitizer every time I pass the bottle. I will just come out and say it, kids are gross. I get handed bus cards via their mouths and I ask them to get their hands out of their nose, pants, mouth, and ears all day long. My excessive washing habits leave my poor hands feeling like a snake ready to shed its skin.

About the Easy Homemade Hand Scrub
The sugar in this scrub acts as an exfoliant. I prefer sugar to salt because it does not burn if I have any cuts on my hands, which is almost always. Paper cuts are a real thing. Sugar is also easily washed down the sink. Feel free to mix up what types of sugar you use. I like to use only white sugar for lemon scrubs. For more soothing scrubs I prefer to combine white and brown sugar. I find white to look more cleansing and the brown to look more soothing. That’s the only reason for the difference.
Vitamin E and coconut oil help to hydrate and moisturize your skin as you scrub. If you don’t have vitamin E oil, it is ok to leave it out.
The lemon oil in this recipe helps to get rid of the stinky food smells on your hands, but it is also cleansing. Lemon oil is used in many homemade cleaners for the same reason.
Easy Homemade Hand Scrub Recipe
Ingredients
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup melted coconut oil
1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil
20 drops of lemon essential oil
Instructions
- First mix together ½ cup of white sugar and ½ cup of brown sugar.
- Then melt ½ cup coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil.
- Finally, add in 20 drops of lemon essential oil.
- When you are ready to use this scrub take a small amount and massage it into your hands. Then rinse and wash as you normally would. The lemon oil makes this great to keep in the kitchen to get any smells off of your hands.
Using the Easy Homemade Hand Scrub
To use this hand scrub, put a small amount into the palm of your hand. Then rub it all over as if you are washing your hands. When you feel well scrubbed, rinse your hands with warm water. I suggest washing your hands with soap at this point, but that is up to you. I do so to avoid any stickiness later. Remember to take off any rings before using the scrub. Getting sugar in the crevices of your wedding ring is a big sticky mess that is completely avoidable.
Homemade Hand Scrub Blends
For generally healthy skin use five drops each of lavender, frankincense and chamomile. These three are perfect for a generic hand scrub.
For a kitchen scrub, you can use any citrus oil or even a blend of oils. If you don’t like or don’t have lemon go ahead and try out some orange essential oil. This is another one of my favorite kitchen scents.
For those with dry hands use 10 drops of rosemary, and five drops each of lavender and frankincense. These oils are particularly good for dry skin.
For those with arthritis or achy hands try using blue tansy. It is a more expensive oil, therefore I would suggest combining two drops of it with 13 drops of peppermint or lavender.
