My Head Would Hurt Too
Whenever somebody says that their head hurts, Mama always says the same thing. “My head would hurt too if it looked like that.” It is always met with an eye roll. Years ago, the comment was met with laughs, but those have been replaced with sighs. When Mama has a headache I ask her what it is named. She always responds with my name. This is met with a smirk.
Nothing is worse than a headache. A small one is annoying to deal with all day. A bad one is down right miserable. It seems that just about anything can bring one on. There are days that I drive home from school without the radio, but all I want is complete silence. Nothing pushes a little headache over the edge like a room that’s never silent or even quiet for that matter.

About the DIY Headache Balm Oils
Frankincense essential oil can help headaches caused by sleep deprivation and stress. It has a calming aroma that can help reduce stress. Frankincense has anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce a headache.
Peppermint essential oil is used to treat pain of all sorts. It helps with small headaches and tension headaches. Peppermint oil increases blood flow and relaxes muscles. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Peppermint essential oil is a staple in every headache remedy.
Rosemary essential oil increases blood flow, relaxes muscles, relieves stress, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. All of these things are good for relieving a headache. This oil is great for hormonal headaches, stress headaches, and migraines.
Lavender essential oil reduces the stress and anxiety that may cause a tension headache. Research has shown that smelling lavender can reduce migraines. Like many of these oils, lavender has anti-inflammatory properties.
Basil essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it helpful for relieving headaches and even migraines. It can also relax muscles and increase blood flow. When you have a headache from a lack of caffeine or sugar this oil will help relieve the pain.

DIY Headache Balm Recipe
Ingredients
¼ cup coconut oil
¼ cup sweet almond oil
2 tablespoons beeswax
15 drops frankincense essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
15 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops basil essential oil
Instructions
- First put ¼ cup of coconut oil, ¼ cup of sweet almond oil, and 2 tablespoons of beeswax in a double boiler. If you don’t have one, see how to make one in the tips below.
- Then, while the ingredients melt, set out your containers. I recommend setting them on parchment paper just in case anything spills. It makes cleaning up so much easier.
- Then, once everything is completely melted, remove the bowl from the heat.
- Next add the 15 drops each of frankincense and peppermint essential oil . Then put in 10 drops each of rosemary, lavender, and basil essential oil .
- After a quick mix, pour the balm into the containers.
- Allow them to sit and cool on the counter. I usually let them sit all night.
- Now you’re done! Put the lids on and the DIY headache balm is ready for use.
Using the DIY Headache Balm
When you feel a headache coming on, rub the headache balm on the areas of tension. This could be your temples, forehead, or the base of your skull.
Tips for Making the DIY Headache Balm
If you don’t have a double boiler, make one using a pot and a glass bowl. Put water in the pot and set the glass bowl on top. This is how I make all of my things because I don’t have a double boiler either.
If the mixture hardens in the cup before you finish pouring it in the molds, simply put the glass measuring cup in the pot of water used to make a double boiler. Once it melts, finish pouring.
If you need to speed up the cooling process, put the filled mold in the fridge or freezer.
