Can You Make Some Homemade Car Interior Wipes?
When Covid hit last year, my husband wanted something that he could use to wipe down the interior of his car. It had to disinfect and not destroy the interior. He did some research and found that the mixture needed to be at least 60% alcohol. He asked if I could make something up for him to use after work or after going to the store. I happily obliged and also made a double batch so that I could have one in my car too.
I wanted the disinfectant to be on a wipe for convenience. But I also needed the wipes to be reusable. I figured I would just throw used wipes in the wash with the rest of the laundry. Plus fabric has more scrubbing power than a paper towel if the need arose. I started by going through my rag basket. There I found an old flour sack towel that was perfect. It was too big, so I ripped it into small squares that would be perfect for a single wipe down.
Then I researched what essential oils would be best for disinfecting. Although not required, I think everything is better with oils. Don’t you? My husband isn’t a big oil fan, but he hasn’t complained about using them in his car, so I guess they worked out fine.
A little bit of measuring and voila, homemade car interior wipes! His wish is my command, at least in this one instance anyway.

About the Homemade Car Interior Wipes
The alcohol used in this recipe can be rubbing alcohol or vodka. Both work as a disinfecting agent. If you are looking for all natural and kid safe, then I recommend using vodka. If you aren’t as worried about those things, then rubbing alcohol works just fine. I used rubbing alcohol because that is what I had on hand. My only vodka was sitting in a jar full of vanilla beans to make extract. Smells yummy, but not for cleaning my car.
The oils I chose to use were clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. These are the oils in the famous thieves blend. It is called thieves because of a story about some French thieves that used these oils to prevent illness while they robbed the dead. These oils all have cleansing properties, which is why I chose to use them in the homemade car interior wipes.
In Missouri we get freezing temperatures. Because there is so much alcohol in this recipe, I don’t worry about it freezing in the winter or spring for that matter. You can have all four seasons in one day here in Missouri.

Using Homemade Car Interior Wipes
When you are ready to use the homemade car interior wipes wring out a wipe so that it isn’t dripping wet. Then you can wipe down your car or hands, whichever is needed. It can be used on the inside door handle, steering wheel, buttons, shift stick, center console, or even the seat belt buckle. If the wipe is dirty, then toss it in the floorboard and then the hamper when you get home. If it doesn’t get dirty then just toss it back in the jar and shake it up again. I did this after a quick disinfect post grocery store or gas station run.

Thank you for sharing how to make these! With three kids and tons of after-school activities, my car is always a mess, but I dislike using cleaning products with tons of chemicals. I got a car upholstery cleaning last week and have been trying to keep it clean. I’m going to make some of these wipes tonight and store them in my car, I think they will be very handy!
