Friday Night Tradition
Every Friday night after dinner, I announce that I’m headed to the bathtub. My husband knows that I will be in there for hours and to just go to bed without me. Since I was a little kid, I have always fallen asleep in the tub. Nothing has changed, except now my mom can’t stop me from taking a tub nap. I’ll fill the tub with water the temperature of molten lava and if I’m feeling fancy I’ll even toss in one of these easy homemade bath bombs. It helps me unwind after a long week teaching 40 tiny humans.

Easy Homemade Bath Bombs Recipe
Ingredients
½ cup citric acid
1 cup baking soda
½ cup arrowroot powder
¼ cup epsom salt
¼ cup melted coconut oil
Water
Instructions
- Begin by mixing together 1//2 cup citric acid, 1 cup baking soda, ½ cup arrowroot powder, and ¼ cup epsom salt.
- Next melt ¼ cup of coconut oil. Then add your essential oils of choice and the coconut oil to the dry ingredients.
- Then using a spray bottle, add water to the bowl until the mixture creates a ball when you squeeze it. I highly recommend mixing it with your hands after every couple of sprays. This will make it very easy to tell when you’ve added enough water.
- Prepare your bath bomb molds by lightly greasing them with melted coconut oil. I use a paper towel dipped in the melted oil to prevent as much mess as possible. Fill both sides with the mixture and press them together. Wipe away the excess that escapes from the sides. Otherwise your bath bomb will look more like Saturn.
- Allow the filled molds to sit undisturbed for at least a day or until it is totally dry. Once dry, the easy homemade bath bombs should easily pop out of the molds. Now they are ready to use or wrap for later.
Easy Homemade Bath Bombs Optional Extras
Color
If you wish to color the bath bombs, try using mica powder. Make sure that you are using a naturally occurring mica powder that is mined instead of a chemically created one. Divide the bath bomb mixture into several smaller bowls to get a variety of colors for the easy homemade bath bombs.
Scent
Bath bombs are the perfect way to enjoy essential oils in the bathtub. This is great for when you don’t feel well, your body aches, or you simply need to relax after a long day. I’ve listed a few ideas, but the possibilities are endless. Just be sure to avoid hot oils.
Sweet Dreams
5 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops frankincense essential oil
2 drops chamomile essential oil
Congestion
5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
3 drops peppermint essential oil
2 drops clary sage essential oil
It All Hurts
5 drops peppermint essential oil
3 drops marjoram essential oil
2 drops helichrysum essential oil
Surprise
A fun treat for the kids is to hide a small toy or trinket inside the bath bomb. Simply put the toy inside when you are filling the mold. Only do this for children who are old enough not to put small things in their mouths to avoid a choking hazard. As the bath bomb dissolves they will find a little surprise in the tub. Floating trinkets are the easiest to find in the bathtub.
Using Easy Homemade Bath Bombs
When you are ready to use your easy homemade bath bombs, simply place them in the tub with you. The water will react with the citric acid causing it to bubble and fizz.
If you are not quite ready to use the bath bombs, they can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
I like to add them to gift baskets or in stockings. They look very nice in a plastic treat bag with a bit of twine at the top. It’s the easiest way to group them together and present them as a gift.
