Just As Good as Tide Pods, But Not as Delicious
Ok, in all seriousness I’ve never eaten homemade laundry pods. But I am sure they are not delicious, although they likely wouldn’t kill you. That’s one of the many reasons that I like using them. If I am going to spend all day wearing clothing, I’d rather not soak them in chemicals.
Your skin is your largest organ. It will absorb whatever is put on it. This is why nicotine patches, magnesium lotion, and progesterone creams all work when applied to the skin. This means that what I put on it matters. Since I wear clothing all day every day, I don’t want to fill it with toxins. Why eat organic food if you wrap yourself in chemicals everyday?
Although I love the homemade laundry pods, I am not perfect. Sometimes I run out or don’t have time to make them. In those cases I use Revive’s laundry strips. They are all natural and don’t have any chemicals. They’re just as good as the homemade laundry pods in my opinion.

About the Ingredients in Homemade Laundry Pods
Castile soap is my favorite kind of soap. Actually it’s one of the only soaps we use in this house. It works for foaming face wash, dish soap, and even cleaning the shower. Castile soap is a vegetable based soap made with olive oil or coconut oil. It is gentle enough to use on the skin of a baby, but tough enough to clean the dirty dishes.
Washing soda softens the water and cleans the laundry. It is very similar to baking soda, but tougher. Baking soda can remove oils, stains, and dirt. It is like the powerhouse of this recipe.
Baking soda helps to brighten laundry and get rid of the stink. It is one of my go to cleaners around the entire house. It will also help to soften the water, which is important if you have hard water like us.
Homemade Laundry Pods Recipe
Ingredients
2 cups washing soda
1 bar castile soap
2 cups baking soda
Spray bottle of water
Essential oils optional
Instructions
- First grate the bar of castile soap into a large mixing bowl. Then measure out 2 cups of washing soda and two cups of baking soda to add to the bowl. If you want to add essential oils go ahead and add 20-30 drops now. I like to use lavender or Tumble & Tidy in my laundry.
- Spray down the mixture with water until it packs like clay.
- Then press it into a silicone mold. I use a mini muffin tray and it works great. As it bubbles up, press it back down. This will take a bit of time. Allow it to sit until it is completely dry. This takes about 24 hours.
- Pop the homemade laundry pods out of the mold and keep them in an airtight jar.
Using Homemade Laundry Pods
Just pop a homemade laundry pod in the washer with a load of laundry just like you would any other laundry pod. I find that it works best if placed on the top of the load. If you have issues with it sticking to the clothing, put it in a delicate bag.
For stains, check out my natural stain removal guide. If you are looking for a scent booster I’ve got a natural version of that too. As for dryer sheets, just go ahead and make the switch to wool dryer balls with a couple drops of essential oils. I’ve got a blog post with everything you need to know about my natural laundry routine.
