In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal product, I would replace it with an all-natural product that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another switch I made was mouthwash. I had heard that alcohol based mouthwash wasn’t great for your oral health, so of course I needed a solution. After some trial and error, I came up with the best homemade natural mouthwash recipe.

About the Oils in The Best Homemade Natural Mouthwash
DIY Thieves Blend
The thieves blend comes from a legend. During the bubonic plague, four thieves robbed the dead. When they were caught, they were questioned about their health. How were they able to avoid catching the plague? They wore a cloth over their faces and filled it with a mix of herbs and oils. Today’s thieves blend is based on what the four thieves claimed to have used.
Clove has analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. Plus it is known to help with toothaches. This oil is only safe for those over six years old although I’ve heard of many mommas using it on teething babies.
Lemon has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. It also helps with canker sores. This oil is only safe for those over six years old.
Cinnamon has analgesic, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties.
Eucalyptus has analgesic, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties. This oil is only safe for those over six years old.
Rosemary has analgesic, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties.
The homemade natural mouthwash uses this potent combination to help keep your mouth clean and fresh.
Other Oil Options
Peppermint is going to give you the traditional mouthwash taste. Peppermint has analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. This oil is only safe for those over six years old.
Spearmint is a less minty option for those who prefer something less spicy. Spearmint has analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. It is commonly used for dental health. It is safe for children, which is perfect because they may prefer it’s taste anyways.
Best Homemade Natural Mouthwash Recipe
Ingredients
1 teaspoon baking soda
Filtered Water
Instructions
- First, add 10 drops of the thieves blend to the bottle. If you want a minty flavor go ahead and put in 5-10 drops of peppermint or spearmint.
- Next, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. This helps the oils mix with the water. I suggest using a funnel or being prepared to clean up a mess.
- Then, fill the bottle with filtered water. I use my Berkey for this.
- Give the bottle a good shake and you are ready to swish!
Using the Homemade Natural Mouthwash
Before using this natural mouthwash, I would suggest giving it a little shake. This is especially true in the first few uses after making a fresh batch. I find that sometimes the oils and baking soda come to the top or don’t dissolve completely.
After flossing and brushing your teeth, take a small amount of the mouthwash. Swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it in the sink.
Storing the Homemade Natural Mouthwash
Sunlight causes essential oils to lose their effectiveness over time. Consequently, it is best to store them out of direct sunlight. I keep my mouthwash in an amber glass bottle under the bathroom sink.
