In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another example was the smell of clean laundry. I love the smell of clean laundry, so I found an essential oil blend to use on the wool dryer balls to replace that smell. I still have a few things left to replace, but over time I’ve slowly learned how to clean without toxic chemicals.

How to the Clean Without Toxic Chemicals in the Kitchen
The kitchen is by far the place where I still use the most traditional cleaners. Some of it is because I’ve not run out of a product because I don’t use much of it and others are because I’ve not found a replacement that I like yet. Like I said, this is a marathon not a sprint.
Dish Soap
For dish soap I use a mixture of ⅓ citrus Castile soap and ⅔ water.
Hand Soap
For hand soap in the kitchen I use half citrus Castile soap and ½ glycerin. I put in a few drops of vitamin E oil to help keep my hands moisturized.
Counter & Cabinets
I have an all purpose spray that I use on countertops and really anything not glass. It’s made with Revive’s Protect or Immunity Boost Concentrate. It’s like Young Living’s Thieves’ cleaner, but cheaper.
Oven Cleaner
For oven drips or stuck on food a little baking soda and elbow grease does the trick. To clean the oven, sprinkle on a little baking soda. Then cover it with wet paper towels and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes. Next get to scrubbing using a coarse sponge like a Scrub Daddy. Finally wipe away all of the baking soda and water with a rag or paper towels.
Rinse Aid
Vinegar is a great rinse aid and works to remove hard water build up as well.
As for now dishwasher pods are still the traditional store bought ones. We’ve tried several recipes and can’t find one we like yet. I’ll keep you updated when I do. That’s it for how to clean without toxic chemicals in the kitchen.
How to the Clean Without Toxic Chemicals in the Bathroom
I’ve managed to replace all of the bathroom cleaners with a nontoxic option. I tend to run out of those cleaners the most often, so they were first to be replaced.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner
I’ve recently found a cleaner that I like to use in the toilet bowl. I’m perfecting the recipe, so look for that coming soon. Fizzing toilet bowl pods works wonders to clean the toilet. I just pop one in and let it fizz while I clean the rest of the bathroom. To disinfect, I spray some all purpose spray in the bowl when I’m done.
Glass Cleaner
The DIY window cleaner works well on windows and mirrors, so that’s what I use to clean the mirrors. I’ll take the rag I used to wipe down the mirror and dust the towel and toilet paper holders.
Daily Shower Spray
Cleaning the shower is one of my least favorite chores. There’s so much scrubbing and it gets dirty again so quickly. How can a place with so much soap get so gross so fast? I’ve made some DIY daily shower spray to help prolong the hated chore. After I get out of the shower, I just spray down the walls and floor. This seems to help keep it clean between scrubs, which keeps me happy.
Tub & Shower Cleaner
I keep a scrub brush filled with soap in the shower. The soap is unscented castile soap with about 5 drops of tea tree and 5 of immunity boost. When it’s time to clean the shower I grab this scrub brush and go. I’ve found it to be so much easier to clean the shower while I’m in the shower. If the build up around the tub is really bad, I’ll sprinkle some baking soda on it before scrubbing. This little trick for using a soap filled brush has been a life changer.
Counters & Hard Surfaces
Similar to the kitchen, I keep a spray bottle of Revive’s Protect or Immunity Boost Concentrate to use on the counter and the outside of the toilet. I add a few extra drops of tea tree to help with mildew since the bathroom tends to be warmer and more prone to it than the kitchen.
Hand Soap
For hand soap in the bathroom I use half unscented Castile soap and ½ glycerin. I put in a few drops of vitamin E oil to help keep my hands moisturized. Then I add 10 – 15 drops of immunity boost or protect essential oils in the soap to help get the germs off when I wash my hands.
That’s it for how to clean without toxic chemicals in the bathroom. I’ve found the bathroom a very easy place to start replacing traditional cleaners. Once you accept that things don’t need to be sterile to be clean, creating your own cleaners is much easier.
How to the Do the Laundry Without Toxic Chemicals
The laundry was a tricky place until Revive released their laundry soap. Now my entire laundry routine is nontoxic.
Laundry Soap
Revive’s fragrance free laundry soap sheets are the perfect solution to your nontoxic laundry needs. I can’t find a homemade laundry soap that works well on dirty clothes. For just the daily wear the homemade stuff works, but for clothes that are actually dirty it doesn’t work at all. The laundry soap from Revive takes care of the daily dirty and the really dirty.
Scent Booster
Like I said, I enjoy the smell of clean laundry. Obviously using fragrance free soap doesn’t leave my clothes with that smell. So I made a scent booster that also helps make the clothes soft and smelly!
Dryer Balls
As I’m sure you could have guessed, I use another Revive product in place of dryer sheets. The wool dryer balls help the laundry dry faster and with some Tumble and Tidy blend it smells good too.
That’s it for how to do laundry without toxic chemicals. I was hesitant at first, but I soon realized that my clothes can get clean and smell nice without the chemicals. I used to scent boosting crystals in all the loads, but now they give me a headache and smell terrible. Funny how your body adjusts.
How to the Clean the Floors Without Toxic Chemicals
When we moved to the new house, I was determined to figure out how to clean the floors with chemicals. The new house has hard floors throughout. There’s tile, wood, and laminate. I bought a Dyson V11 Animal cordless vacuum to really suck up the dust and cat fur. It works great and I love it! I particularly like that my long hair doesn’t get stuck in the roller.
I researched and finally settled on a steam mop. The Shark Lift-Away Pro Steam Pocket Mop won the great mop debate. Let me tell you, my floors have never been cleaner. I highly recommend this mop. I can use it on all three types of flooring. The pads are reusable and all you need is water.
That’s it for how to clean the floors without toxic chemicals. This was not a big leap because the only real difference was in the mop that I was using. It didn’t drastically change my routine at all. In fact, it made it much easier.
