My Head Would Hurt Too
Whenever somebody says that their head hurts, Mama always says the same thing. “My head would hurt too if it looked like that.” It is always met with an eye roll. Years ago, the comment was met with laughs, but those have been replaced with sighs. When Mama has a headache I ask her what it is named. She always responds with my name. This is met with a smirk.
Nothing is worse than a headache. A small one is annoying to deal with all day. A bad one is down right miserable. It seems that just about anything can bring one on. There are days that I drive home from school without the radio, but all I want is complete silence. Nothing pushes a little headache over the edge like a room that’s never silent or even quiet for that matter.

About Willow Bark
Willow bark acts as a natural pain reliever. It contains salicin which is the natural version of the active ingredient in aspirin. Unlike aspirin, it is much easier on the stomach and liver. Just like aspirin it can help reduce a fever, relieve a headache, and ease aches and pains. One study found it to be just as effective at treating back pain as synthetic pain relievers.
Willow bark has been used as herbal medicine since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used it as a pain reliever. China and Europe used it to alleviate fevers and help with arthritis pain and inflammation. Of course these ancient civilizations had no idea why it worked. They often took it as a tea, which is still an option although it is very bitter.
Heachaches and migraines can be treated with a willow bark tincture. It reduces inflammation and blood pressure, which makes it ideal for migraines. Of course it works on regular headaches as well. I tend to pair it with my headache balm.

80 proof vodka or vegetable glycerine
Instructions
- First pack a jar about ⅔ full of willow bark.
- Then fill the jar with 80 proof alcohol. I use cheap vodka. Vegetable glycerine would also work.

- After the 6 weeks are up, strain off the bark and put the tincture into an amber glass bottle.
Using a Willow Bark Tincture for Headaches
Although a willow bark tincture works great for adults, it should never be used on children with fevers. Just like aspirin it can cause Reye’s Syndrome in children. Use caution and do your own research before deciding whether to give this tincture to anybody under age 16.
Take a drop or two of willow bark tincture for headaches or a fever. If that isn’t helping take a couple more drops. You can take up to 100 drops or 1 teaspoon per day.

Would this work with Curly willow? I can’t seem to find much on curly willow specifically. I know typically it’s white or black willow that’s used for these recipes.

I do not know, I’ve never tried anything besides white willow.

can you please explain what 80 proof means please. and why the option of veg glycerin, I don’t know about that. thanks.
morgansfarmhouse says
Proof indicates how much alcohol is in something. When you look at the bottle you’ll find a number such as 80 proof. Vegetable glycerin will taste sweeter, so it will be easier for children to swallow. It is also an option for those that do not consume alcohol.
