When I was teaching second grade, I got a terrible cough. When a coughing attack would strike there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t talk, walk, or breathe. It was absolutely terrible. The school nurse heard me from down the hall and came bringing water and a cough drop. My poor students trained themselves to respond when I started coughing. They would grab my water off my desk and a cough drop out of my coat pocket and bring them to me. I never told them that the cough drops were in my coat pocket, but they pay attention to everything you do apparently. I had a coughing attack and one sweet boy jumped into action bringing me water. A girl was looking for a cough drop and the boy told her, “They’re in her coat pocket!” They never ceased to amaze me.

Natural Remedies for a Cough: Essential Oils
Eucalyptus essential oil is my favorite for a cough. That is what is commonly used in chest rubs, so it makes sense that it would help. You can dilute it into a roller bottle and rub it on your chest or put it in some boiling water and inhale the steam. Eucalyptus has been shown to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Peppermint essential oil is also commonly found in cough remedies. It helps cool your throat and relax your muscles. You can diffuse it, apply it to your chest, or add it to some boiling water and inhale the steam.
Natural Remedies for a Cough: Homeopathy
Homeopathic remedies used for a cough will depend on the symptoms. I’ll cover a couple here, but you can read the homeopathy guide from Boiron for more information.
For dry coughs made worse by cold air try Rumex Crispus. If the cough is sounding croupy, take Spongia Tosta.
For a wet cough that is worse in a hot shower take Natrum Sulphuricum. If you are coughing up mucus take Antimonium Tartaricum.
Chestal comes in a variety of forms including ones for kids. It helps to loosen mucus and soothe a dry cough. It comes as pellets, syrup, or honey.
Natural Remedies for a Cough: Herbs
Honey is amazing for a cough. It will coat a scratchy throat to help ease the tickle. I tend to take a teaspoon of it because I get the best and most immediate effects. If you do not like taking it that way, mix it into a tea or just some hot water.
Elderberry syrup can work in a similar way to honey while also supporting your immune system. I sweeten it with honey anyway. The thick syrup will soothe your throat and get rid of the tickle.
If you want a cough drop to suck on try a homemade honey, lemon, cough drop. They have all of the good stuff without any of the bad. You could even add a sucker stick to make cough drop suckers for little kids.
Oftentimes people think of tea when looking for natural remedies for a cough. Ginger tea is an excellent choice. You can easily find ginger at your local grocery store. Just add some hot water and you’ve got yourself some tea. It is really good for a wet mucousy cough. Another option is marshmallow root. It has been used for centuries to help calm coughs. Soak the dry herb in cold water instead of hot. Put about a tablespoon in two cups of cold water and let it steep overnight in the fridge.
