Teaching Petri Dishes
Teaching means that I am constantly exposed to everybody else’s yuck. Preschoolers are precious, but I must say they are downright disgusting. Don’t lick the door knob. Boogers stay in your nose or in a tissue. Please don’t cough on me. Despite lots of hand washing and toy cleaning, we are all going down at some point. In August, I will start taking this elderberry syrup recipe. It supports my immune system so that when my little petri dishes arrive at school, I don’t worry when they sneeze all over me.
As cold and flu season approaches, I add to my immune boosting routine. At night, I will use the immunity roller on my wrists, the soles of my feet, and belly button. This combination of oils helps the body defend itself by supporting the immune system. I’ll also start incorporating more bone broth into our meals. Bone broth has a whole host of benefits, one of which is supporting the immune system. That’s why people think of eating chicken noodle soup when they are sick. Crock Pot chicken tortellini soup is one of our favorite ways to eat bone broth. Plus it freezes well and makes for an easy dinner later too.
We all know that hand washing and healthy living are important, but I am going to say it anyways. Be vigilant about washing your hands. It’s best if done with soap and water. Hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap will kill all of the good stuff along with the bad, so it is preferable to avoid both if possible. Consuming sugar will weaken your immune system’s response to germs. Now is the time to cut out Coke and cookies or at least consume in moderation. Getting outside in the sunshine is always important, but the sunlight can actually help your immune system as well. It increases your D3 production, which in turn helps your immune system function. Get out for at least 10-15 minutes a day, preferably more if possible.

Research has shown that taking elderberry can reduce the severity and duration of an illness.
Honey can sooth a sore throat and ease a scratchy cough. Like elderberry, taking raw honey can reduce the length of illness and lessen the symptoms. It has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties as well as being packed with antioxidants.

Taking the Elderberry Syrup Recipe
Using elderberry daily can support your immune system. A teaspoon a day should do the trick. When you notice a cold or flu coming on increase your dosage to a teaspoon every 2 hours. If symptoms are continuing to worsen, you can take it as often as every 30 minutes.
This recipe is not safe for babies because it contains honey. If you wish to make an elderberry syrup that is safe for babies under 12 months old, try replacing the honey with rice syrup, maple syrup, or sugar.
