Most dog treats are the equivalent of junk food. They are full of nasty ingredients just like you’d find on the ingredients list of human junk food. Treat them with some sourdough dog treats instead! They will think it’s a special hand out if they are anything like my pup.

Does It Have 4 Legs?
I have wanted a beagle since I saw the movie Shiloh as a kid. Wouldn’t you know a litter of 3 beagle pups showed up on a shelter’s Facebook page one day as I was scrolling. My husband did not want a dog and he had a million reasons why we didn’t need a dog. I wanted a dog and had a million reasons why we needed one. The conversation ended on that Saturday when he said, “Do whatever you want.” So I did.
Tuesday I went to meet the dog. I agreed to come back and get him Wednesday and pick him up after his last round of puppy shots. So Tuesday after I left the shelter, I stopped and got my husband’s favorite fast food complete with chocolate shake. When I handed it to him, he asked what I had done. I told him nothing…yet. He asked if it had 4 legs and I told him it would on Wednesday. He was so mad he started pulling out his beard. Then he angrily mowed the yard and it’s never looked so good.
As soon as I held him the tiny 5 pound beagle puppy, he changed his mind. It’s been 2 years and he loves his Tuck Tuck. I recently asked him if he would rather have a dog or a cat. He said for sure a dog because they were so much more fun and actually loved you back. Since that day, he hasn’t once told me to do whatever I want.

Safe Ingredients for Sourdough Dog Treats
When making sourdough dog treats be aware that some sweeteners are toxic to dogs. Xylitol is a very common one that can poison a pup.
Make sure that the pumpkin purée only contains pumpkin. This is not the same as pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin purée is just cooked pumpkin.
Peanut butter is where you need to be especially careful about xylitol. Unsweetened and unsalted is best, but you may have trouble finding that. A creamy peanut butter without any xylitol should be fine. I find the Member’s Mark natural peanut butter at Sam’s to be just fine.
Whole wheat flour is healthier than white flour, just like it is for humans. But if you only have regular all-purpose on hand then just use that. It won’t hurt them.

Sourdough Dog Treats Recipe
Ingredients
2 cups flour
1 cup oats
2 eggs
⅔ cup sourdough discard
½ cup pumpkin purée
¼ cup peanut butter
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Olive oil optional
Instructions
- First mix together 2 cups flour, 1 cup oats, 2 eggs, ⅔ cup sourdough discard, ½ cup pumpkin purée, ¼ peanut butter, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
- Allow the dough to sit for 30 minutes. This gives the oats time to absorb some liquid. If the dough is still sticky, add another ¼ cup flour. Knead until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl.
- On a floured surface roll out the dough to ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. If you don’t have a cookie cutter, use a pizza cutter to make 1 inch squares.
- Place the treats on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes. For a crispier treat, spray sourdough dog treats with a bit of olive oil before baking. Allow to cool completely before feeding them to your dog.
