Wash Your Hands Scrub Your Hands
Growing up, my mom had a song for everything. It is a skill I was lucky enough to inherit. She had a song about everything from green beans to three-legged dogs. When it was time to teach me to wash my hands, she made up a song for that too.
Wash your hands.
Scrub your hands.
Rub them to and fro.
Rinse your hands.
Rinse your hands.
Now you’re free to go.
Wuh Wuh
I now sing that same song with my preschool class while they wash their hands. They love it and it helps remind them of the steps of washing their hands.

Why Avoid Conventional Foaming-Hand Soap?
Conventional soap has all sorts of yucky chemicals in it that I’d rather keep off of my skin. Starting with the antibacterial hype. Antibacterial soap kills the good and the bad bacteria. That means it is killing off your body’s natural defense system.
Our skin is our largest organ. It also absorbs the chemicals we put on our skin. So whether it’s lotion, hand soap, or astringent it’s important to avoid products containing chemicals that we don’t want in the body. Castile soap is a non-toxic option for almost any soap product that you use in the home.
Parabens, sulfates, and phthalates are commonly used in conventional hand soap. None of them are good for your skin or your endocrine system. Do your own research before coming to any conclusions. After reading the first couple of articles on Google, I decided to avoid them.

- First add ¼ cup of castile soap to a foaming soap dispenser or mason jar with a foaming pump lid.
- Next fill the dispenser the rest of the way up with distilled water.

Non-Toxic Foaming Hand Soap Optional Extras
Plain and unscented soap has its place, but I like to jazz it up a bit. You can add 15 drops of essential oils if you wish. If you want some extra cleaning power try a mixture of lemon, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. I like to add lemon or another citrus to the hand soap in the kitchen. It helps get rid of any smells. Near the holidays peppermint or pine oils feel festive.
If you struggle with dry skin, add a tablespoon of vitamin E oil. It will help to nourish and moisturize the skin. Jojoba would also work if you prefer that. For additional moisture use a lotion bar after washing.
Now this sounds crazy, but it makes soap fun for kids. Put a couple of Lego bricks or small plastic animals in the bottle with the soap. I’ve found bugs, dinosaurs, and unicorns at the Dollar Tree. The more the kids wash their hands, the sooner they will “rescue” the toy inside.
