Swallowing Fiery Swords
Strep throat has plagued me since I was a little kid. Every year I get that tickle that means it’s coming. It feels like I’m swallowing fiery swords. So anytime I get a sore throat I’m a bit anxious about it being strep. Using natural remedies for a sore throat has taught me to calm down and relax a bit because not every scratchy throat turns into white pustules.

Natural Remedies for a Sore Throat: Essential Oils
Peppermint essential oil is great for cooling a sore throat. Plus it can help get to the root of what is causing it due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Gargling essential oils is an easy way to get them right to the source. Since I’m sure your mom told you to gargle warm salt water go ahead and add a drop or two of peppermint essential oil.
Clove has antiviral properties which also make it great for a sore throat. The main reason to use it for a sore throat is that it can relieve the pain. Diffusing would work, but gargling it or rolling some on your neck would work best.
Cinnamon essential oil was the winner in a study done on using oils to prevent strep throat. It has anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Gargling would be best, but rolling or diffusing will help too.
Natural Remedies for a Sore Throat: Homeopathy
If your throat hurts into your ears and is especially bad when swallowing take Phytolacca Decandra.
ThroatCalm is an easy option and one I keep on hand. When I don’t feel good I don’t want to think about which medicine I need. I just want to grab and go.
Chestal will also work, especially if you think you may have the start of a cold. It comes in pellets or as a liquid. I like the honey kind personally.
Natural Remedies for a Sore Throat: Herbs
When I feel a sore throat coming I’ll whip up a batch of cough drops. I’ll add some elderberry syrup to them to help my immune system fight off any germs. The honey in them helps to soothe my throat and get rid of the scratchy feeling.
One of my favorite natural remedies for a sore throat is my sore throat spray. It works just as well as Chloroseptic. You better order some herbs and get a batch started now so that come cold and flu season you’ll be ready. It even worked when I had strep last spring. A couple sprays and the pain is gone!
Marshmallow root is wonderful for a sore throat as well. Steep it in cold water overnight in the fridge. Then drink it as a tea. Add a little honey for extra soothing power.
