Creating a Homegrown and Homemade Life
Were you a chicken homesteader or a garden homesteader? Most people start with one or the other. I started in the garden, moved on to the kitchen, and proceeded to chickens. I’m going to give you some tips to start a homestead garden that will actually feed your family and reduce your grocery budget.
Anybody else remember shaking a jar of cream and marbles as a kid? I can’t remember anybody ever actually making butter. Whipped cream at best. While fun, it was efficient. So as an adult, what if I taught you how to churn butter in a mixer instead? Your arms won’t get nearly as tired and there’s no chance of a marble breaking the jar.
So, you’ve bought the raw milk and now you need to skim off the cream. They make fancy machines, but unless you drink a lot of milk that isn’t necessary. You can learn how to separate cream from milk without any special tools, using things you likely have on hand already.
Seed oils have gotten a lot of bad publicity lately. So now everybody wants to learn how to render beef tallow in the Crock Pot. It is much healthier for you and makes some delicious french fries. Whether you want to use it for face cream or fried chicken the process is the same.
When the thermometer creeps up and the sun peeks out from behind the clouds, it starts to feel like garden season. So although it’s not warm enough for tomatoes, there are plenty of early spring crops to plant. Nothing like tiny sprouts to lighten your mood.
