Hard Boiled Disaster
One might assume that boiling eggs is one of those simpler skills to master in the kitchen. Well I am here to tell you that it is not. Or at least it wasn’t for me. Google can easily tell you how long to boil the eggs, but it doesn’t give you any tips or tricks for peeling them. Many times, I made hard boiled eggs just to lose half the white when peeling them. Of course they tasted the same, but it was very frustrating. And I wouldn’t be caught dead making deviled eggs for company.
Then I found the Instant Pot and it was a hard boiled egg game changer. The eggs came out perfectly cooked and easy to peel. Although I do still have the occasional stubborn egg, I no longer lose half of the whites while peeling eggs.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
Hard boiled eggs are not difficult to make, but they are difficult to make pretty. Farm fresh eggs make this even more difficult. Either the yolk isn’t centered or the white comes off in chunks when you peel it.
When you place the eggs in the Instant Pot, make sure to put the pointy side down. This will help center the yolk while it cooks. Although the standard wire trivet will work, I find that the silicone egg trivet makes this much simpler to do. It’s less of a balancing act with the right tools.
Although not every egg will peel perfectly every time, I’ve found Instant Pot hard boiled eggs tend to peel better than making them on the stove. Older eggs are easier to peel, which is why store bought eggs peel easier. If you are using farm fresh eggs, try using your oldest eggs.
Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs Recipe
Ingredients
1 cup water
As many eggs as you want
Instructions
- First add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot. This is true whether you make one egg or fill the trivet.
- Place a trivet in the bottom and fill it with eggs. The standard wire trivet will do, but I really like my silicone egg trivet.
- Then cook the eggs on high pressure for 5 minutes. Allow it to naturally release for another 5 minutes. Then put the eggs in an ice bath for another 5 minutes.
- Once they are cooled, you can peel them. They will keep in the fridge for up to a week.
Using Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
Instant Pot hard boiled eggs make a great breakfast. I can prepare them for the whole week and have protein ready to go each morning. Sliced on top of a sourdough bagel or eaten whole make for a quick breakfast.
But they will also make good deviled eggs. Or egg salad, which is basically deviled eggs all mashed up. Some egg salad between a couple slices of sourdough sandwich bread is perfect for a picnic lunch or day by the creek.
