Beans Beans the Musical Fruit
This rhyme was one of many things my uncles taught me as a little girl that did not go over well when I later brought them up at the dinner table. Uncles are good for that sort of thing, especially when they grew up being the little brothers.
My Mama would make a big pot of beans and a pan of cornbread for lunch when I would stay with her and Papa during the day. You could smell it cooking all morning, so by lunchtime you were ready for a bowl. Papa always crumbled up his cornbread and put it in the ham and beans. I wanted to do everything just like Papa, so I did and still do the same thing. I insist on having cornbread in the beans otherwise it just doesn’t taste right.

Why Soak the Beans Before Making CrockPot Ham & Beans?
Beans contain phytic acid, which hinders digestion. It prevents your body from absorbing all the good stuff from the beans. Soaking the beans gets rid of the phytic acid so that your body can use the good stuff.
I find the easiest way to soak the beans is in the CrockPot because it means I only have one pot to wash. Start by putting 2 cups of dry beans in the CrockPot with 6 cups of water. Cook them on high for half an hour, then let them soak overnight or up to 24 hours. Now your beans are ready to be prepared into some CrockPot ham & beans.

Freezing CrockPot Ham & Beans
I have found that freezing the ham and beans in a muffin tin works the best for leftovers. It makes it easy to grab a couple of pucks to reheat for lunch or dinner.
For a larger serving, try freezing the ham and beans in quart plastic bags laid flat in the freezer.
You can also freeze the cornbread. Just wrap up individually sized pieces in plastic wrap before placing them in a gallon sized plastic bag.
Now you can have CrockPot ham and beans and cornbread
