I Can Do That!
When I was planning our wedding, I tried to keep things on a very tight budget. It was going to be at a barn and we would both be wearing boots. I loved the rustic, farmhouse style, but it was much too expensive. I was unemployed and completing student teaching at the time. So with a little help from Papa, I created these beautiful farmhouse signs with Cricut for the wedding.
We went out back and found some wood from his old fence. He cut it into pieces and I stapled them all together to make signs. Then I used my Cricut to make stencils. Soon I was painting signs and walking down the aisle. After the wedding, I hung them up in our first home. They were one of my favorite DIYs for the wedding.

How to Keep Costs Down When Making Farmhouse Signs with Cricut
I don’t know about you, but I hate the idea of cutting vinyl to use as a stencil. It’s too expensive to use once and throw away. Instead I’ve found contact paper to work just fine. You can purchase a large roll of it at any big box store. It works just fine and costs a lot less.
Wood is also very expensive. Check places like Restore, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist for scrap lumber or pallets. In our old town, there was a local hardware store that gave old pallets away for free. Check around and remember that it never hurts to ask

Supplies
Wood to Paint
Contact Paper
Paint
Mod Podge
Paint Brushes
Cricut
Optional Clear Coat
Instructions
- First design and cut out a stencil using your Cricut or Silhouette. Place the contact paper with the backing up.
- Then carefully weed out the letters, removing anything you want to paint.
- Next remove the backing and place the stencil on the wooden sign you wish to paint.
- After pressing the stencil down really well, put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the stencil. This will keep the paint from bleeding.
- Once the Mod Podge is dry, go ahead and paint the stencil. You may need to apply a couple of coats.
- When everything is dry carefully remove the stencil. Sometimes, I have issues with the paint wanting to come up too. I’ve found removing the stencil while the paint is still tacky solves this problem.
- If you intend to leave the sign outside in the weather, I suggest spraying the sign with a clear coat to protect it.
Tips for Making Farmhouse Signs with Cricut
Using smooth wood is easier. It bleeds less because the stencil sticks better.
If you are using reclaimed wood, at least wipe it down with a damp rag before beginning. If you sand it, make sure to wipe it down as well.
Removing the stencil while the paint is still tacky seems to work the best. Sometimes once dry the paint wants to come up too.
It is better to do multiple thin coats than one heavy coat. This applies to Mod Podge, paint, and the clear coat.
Acrylic paint seems to work best for these projects. It sticks well to the wood whether it is sanded or not.
Use your Cricut scraper to firmly place the contact paper on the wood.
