Does your baby love grabbing and mouthing blankets and toys? Make them a baby taggy blanket! With a variety of textures and colors, it is bound to be a favorite. It also makes a great baby shower gift!

Mr. Grabby Hands

My little man has reached the age where he is alert and grabbing everything. My long hair and the strings on my sweatshirts are some of his favorites. But glasses, the changing pad, the cat’s fur, and the burp cloth are also fascinating. The cat is not a fan of the baby anyways, so grabbing him by the ear fur was not a great move. So he needed something to grab that wasn’t likely to slap and hiss at him.

Choosing Materials for a Baby Taggy Blanket

Babies love exploring a variety of textures. Minky fabric is a very common choice for baby blankets. It is nice and soft with little bubbles through the material. It can be paired with a cute flannel print to match any nursery theme.

When selecting ribbons, look for a variety of widths and textures. Silky textures are a common favorite.

Materials

Minky Fabric ½ yard

Flannel ½ yard

Matching ribbons

Instructions

  1. First cut a 15 inch square out of the minky fabric and the flannel. You will also need to cut 4 inch long pieces of ribbon. I used about 20 pieces total.
  2. Next fold the ribbons in half and pin the loose ends to the edge of the fabric. Make sure to pin them to the front of the flannel. Then you are going to use a straight stitch to sew them down. I use all ⅜ inch seams on this blanket.
  3. Then pin the minky square to the flannel square right sides together. Once again run a straight stitch around the outside leaving a 2 inch gap.
  4. Pull the fabric right side out through the 2 inch gap. Then sew the gap shut.
  5. Run one final stitch around the perimeter of the blanket to give it a finished look.
