Easy Christmas Gift Idea? Fat Quarter Rag Dolls!
Christmas is quickly approaching. I enjoy giving handmade gifts to those I love. The problem is that many of them take a lot of time to create and I never plan that far ahead of time. Plus, teaching from Thanksgiving to Christmas is the craziest time of the year. I come home exhausted and have no energy left to make up some homemade gifts. I save that for Christmas break. That means anything homemade must be quick, easy, and simple. This fat quarter, rag doll DIY fits the bill. Plus they are a hit with little girls.
As a die hard LIttle House fan, this rag doll reminds me of days playing Laura in the backyard. I had two rag dolls, both named Charolette. Pairing a fat quarter rag doll with Little House in the Big Woods would be a perfect gift for the little girls in your life. For those not ready for chapter books, try a My First Little House book. Inspire a love of reading and screen-free play this Christmas.
A rag doll is also perfect for taking to church because it doesn’t make any noise when it falls on the floor or gets shaken around. They are easy to pack into a bag because they compress down much smaller than a plastic baby doll. The perfect way to keep a little one quiet during service.
This DIY is easily adapted to fit any size of fabric. I used both a fat quarter and a bandana. If you have some good sized scraps, just cut them into a square and make up a rag doll using what is already on hand. The smaller scraps can be cut to make dresses and aprons for the dolls.

Fat Quarter Rag Doll DIY
- First cut the fabric into a square. My square was 18”.
- Next, using embroidery thread, tie two corners of the fabric about half an inch in. These will be the rag doll’s hands.
- Then take a handful of polyfill and place it about a quarter of the way down the fabric. The hands are the top of the fabric. Make sure the polyfill is centered between hands. Fabric scraps can be used instead of polyfill.
- Now tie some embroidery thread below the polyfill to create the head.
- Lastly pull the hands out to the sides and tie another piece of embroidery thread below them. I try to get the thread as high as possible, so that it is tied under the rag doll’s armpits.
