Cozy up with a microwavable corn pillow this winter. It will keep your toes warm at night or make a perfect cuddle buddy for the kids. This is the perfect project for a beginner sewer and makes a great gift too.

Corn Pillows Galore!
When I turned 9, I got a sewing machine from my parents. I decided to make microwavable corn pillows for everybody that Christmas. I sewed up little bags and filled each with corn. I picked fabric that I thought each person might like. There were corn pillows galore that Christmas.
Over the years, I’ve had several corn pillows. They work great to preheat the bed while you shower. During the winter, they keep your feet toasty warm. If you have cramps, a corn pillow feels amazing! My friend even used one to keep her bearded dragon warm when he was out of the tank. If kept in the freezer, they can double as ice packs. I like to put a small one on my face when I have a migraine. Works wonders! Little kids may prefer a Boo Boo Buddy. It’s the same thing, but looks like an animal. If you’re on the go, try some hand warmers. It’s all the same idea, a bag of corn that can be frozen or microwaved.

Where to Buy Corn for the Microwavable Corn Pillow
The corn used in a microwavable corn pillow is dried, whole kernel corn. It can be easily found at farm supply stores. I usually find it back with cattle feed.
If you are unable to find corn, you can use rice. I prefer corn because it smells good when heated in the microwave. It smells like popcorn actually. Rice works just as well, but I don’t like the smell.
Either way, you need to make sure that you either microwave or freeze the filling promptly. If not, you will get bugs. I find it easiest to just make the microwavable corn pillows and pop them in the microwave for a minute or two. Although, I have also divided up the large bags of rice and corn into smaller plastic bags and stored them in the freezer until I was ready to use them.
How to Make a Microwavable Corn Pillow
Supplies
Fat quarter of 100% cotton or flannel
Sewing machine or needle
Matching thread
Dried whole kernel corn
Funnel (optional, but helpful)
Cutting mat (optional)
Instructions
- Before starting, wash and dry the fabric. If it needs ironing, do that too.
- Fold the fabric in half so that it is 9 inches by 22 inches. Cut perpendicular to the fold so that it is 9 inches long and 7 inches tall when folded in half. When unfolded it will be 18 inches by 7 inches.
- Then fold the fabric with the right sides together.
- Sew around the edge with a ⅜ seam. That’s usually the first line on the machine. Make sure to use tight stitches so that nothing can fall out. Start in the middle of a side and do a little backstitch. When you get back leave about a two inch wide gap. Use another backstitch at the end.
- Then trim the excess fabric from the corners. This will make it look nicer when turned right side out. Start using the gap to turn the bag right side out. Use the end of an unsharpened pencil to poke out the corners.
- Next you’ll need to fill the bag about ¾ full with corn. This is where the funnel may come in handy.
- Either do a quick hand stitch or put the pillow back on the sewing machine to close the gap. Make sure to fold the fabric in a bit so that you don’t see raw edges. And now you have a microwavable corn pillow!
Using a Microwavable Corn Pillow
To warm up the microwavable corn pillow, just put it in the microwave for a minute or two. Adjust the time until you find the perfect amount of warmth.
If you wish to use it as an ice pack, place it in the freezer for several hours. I prefer to keep mine in a plastic bag so that they don’t accidentally get food on them or pick up any food smells. You can take it from the freezer and put it in the microwave if you decide you want it warmed up.
