You Had to Google That?
I called my mom elated with myself. For the first time ever, I made mashed potatoes from real potatoes. They were delicious, perfect, and the recipe was so easy to follow. She stopped me and asked if I had seriously Googled a mashed potato recipe. I went on to tell her the secret is lots of milk and butter. Her eye roll could be heard from 200 miles away. Indeed, I did have to Google how to make mashed potatoes. As it turns out, they aren’t just mashed up potatoes like I thought. But now I know how easy homemade mashed potatoes are to make. Everybody’s gotta start somewhere.

Let’s Learn to Cook from Scratch Again
In our quest for convenience we have lost the skill of cooking from scratch. It has faded away, only to be replaced by boxes, cans, and microwavable meals. Although there is a time and place for such convenience, it shouldn’t be the staple. This shift happened in only a couple of generations. Society has been convinced that we can’t make something as delicious as the food in the box or that it will take too much time. Let’s be the generation to reclaim the kitchen and learn to cook from scratch again.
Easy Homemade Mashed Potato Recipe
Ingredients
Potatoes
Milk
Butter
Salt
Pepper
Optional Cheese
Instructions
- To begin, put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. You will need enough water to cover the potatoes. Make sure to salt it well.
- While that heats up, peel and quarter the potatoes. Toss them in the pot as you chop them up. I tend to make one per person because we really like easy homemade mashed potatoes around here. Put a lid on the pot and let them boil. You will know they are ready when you can easily pierce them with a fork.
- Next, drain the water and return the potatoes to the pot. Mash them up with a potato masher, spoon, or fork.
- Then add a couple tablespoons of butter and ¼ cup of milk. Give everything a good stir and let the butter melt over low heat. After another good stir you can decide to add more butter and milk a little at a time until the consistency is perfect. I tend to like mine thicker, so I don’t add much.
- Finally add in the salt and pepper. Just do it to taste, but know that potatoes take a lot of salt. If you want to get fancy, place the mashed potatoes in a greased baking dish and top them with cheese. Toss them in the oven until the cheese melts.
Serving Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes
Chicken Noodle Soup
My favorite way to serve easy homemade mashed potatoes is underneath some chicken noodle soup. It’s the perfect winter pairing. Both can be made up ahead of time and frozen. Then this is an easy weeknight freezer meal.
Meatloaf
Can you even eat meatloaf without mashed potatoes? I don’t believe I have ever been served one without the other.
Whole Chicken
If you are looking for an easy meal, throw a whole chicken in the Instant Pot, whip up some mashed potatoes, and steam some veggies. Super easy for those times when you just don’t feel like cooking. It’s even easier if you make up the potatoes ahead of time and have them in the freezer.
Shepherd’s Pie
If you are going to make shepherd’s pie, then you are going to need some mashed potatoes for the top. I like to make this when I’ve got leftovers that nobody is planning to eat. It’s also a great freezer meal.
