But I Won
Several summers ago, while babysitting, I decided to take the kids to the park for a game of Gaga ball. The local girl scout troop had just put in a ring. Although none of us had played before it was easy to learn and we were having a blast. The competition was fierce. Ok well maybe my competitiveness was fierce. The kids were only 9 and 7 so fierce might be a bit of a stretch. Anyway I swung hard and got the ball with the tips of my fingers, thus winning the game. I’m sure it looked more spectacular in my head than it did to those around. My shoulder popped and I couldn’t lift my arm above shoulder height. Nothing seemed to help the pain except for some DIY sore muscle rub and my sore muscle roller. When asked what happened, I always started with, “Well the important thing is that I won.”

What’s in the DIY Sore Muscle Rub?
Beeswax, coconut oil, and olive oil are the base for the DIY sore muscle rub. Beeswax keeps the coconut oil from melting when the house reaches 76 degrees in the summertime. Coconut oil and olive oil make the beeswax easier to apply. The combination gives you an easy to use salve.
Peppermint essential oil will provide a cooling effect and acts as an anti-inflammatory.
Helichrysum essential oil helps the body repair tissues, which will speed up your healing process. It increases circulation, relieves pain, and is an anti-inflammatory.
Ginger essential oil has a warming effect, so combined with peppermint it works like Icy Hot. It also helps reduce pain and inflammation.
Clary sage essential oil works to relieve tension which should help any muscle soreness.
Lavender essential oil will help sooth the muscles, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve blood circulation.

DIY Sore Muscle Rub Recipe
Ingredients
¼ cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons beeswax
¼ cup olive oil
20 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops helichrysum essential oil
20 drops ginger essential oil
10 drops clary sage essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
Instructions
- First melt ¼ cup coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of beeswax in a double boiler or use a pan of water with a glass bowl on top.
- Then mix in ¼ cup of olive oil.
- After removing it from the heat, add in your essential oils and mix well.
- Quickly pour the DIY sore muscle rub into a jar, tin, or tube. Mason jars, metal tins, and deodorant tubes all work well.
- Allow it to completely cool on the counter or in the refrigerator before you put the lid on.

Using the DIY Sore Muscle Rub
Apply the DIY sore muscle rub after a hard workout or long day in the garden. Gently massage into the area. It is safe to apply multiple times per day if you are a healthy adult.
Do not apply to open cuts. It will hurt and sting.
When you’re done applying it, make sure to wash your hands. Accidentally wiping your eye will also hurt and sting.
You can also try out my Sore Muscle Roller. It smells amazing and works wonders too. Or pop a corn pillow in the freezer for a few hours to use as an ice pack.
