Guess I’m Crunchy Now
When I got married, I made friends with lots of ladies at church that would be labeled as crunchy moms today. Listening to them led me down a path of scrutinizing labels, questioning ingredients, and researching alternatives. It began with essential oils. Next came food. Then homeopathy. And now it’s pretty much everything.
I found a functional fertility doctor after our third loss. She is very passionate about crunchy mom things and took me even deeper down the rabbit hole. When I told her that I would be having our baby boy at home, she laughed and said that I took the crunchy mom thing all the way. So I guess I’m officially a crunchy mom now.

Why Make a Crunchy Mom First Aid Kit?
First aid supplies are full of forever chemicals, PFAS, preservatives, and endocrine disruptors. Not exactly what I want to be using on open wounds. Especially not on my baby.
Bandaids contain PFAS. That stands for Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This is a groups of substances that are very good at repelling grease, water, and heat. You’ll find them in Teflon, waterproof jackets, and carpets. PFAS are associated with kidney cancer, thyroid disease, asthma, changes in liver enzymes, and high cholesterol. Because they are so difficult to break down, most people in the US have PFAS in their system.
Neosporin and first aid sprays contain petroleum, neomycin, Benzalkonium CI, and Disodium EDTA. In other words, they contain possible carcinogens, irritants, endocrine disruptors, and neurotoxins.
Medications like Tylenol contain corn syrup, artificial flavors, food dyes, parabens, and propylene glycol. None of that is healthy for a body already feeling run down.
Obviously I wanted better options in my crunchy mom first aid kit. I may not be able to get rid of all the bad stuff, but I can do better than the industry standard.

What’s In My Crunch Mom First Aid Kit?
I could not find a first aid kit that fit both my budget and my requirements. So I had to gather the supplies and make one myself.
Bandaids are the first thing that comes to mind when making a crunchy mom first aid kit. Welly, Patch, and FEBU are all better options. I can often find them on sale through Azure Standard or at TJ Maxx. No PFAS in our boo-boos.
Instead of Neosporin, I added some colloidal silver spray and some burn and wound cream. Colloidal silver is an antimicrobial so it can be used to help clean the wound. Our local Amish store carries a burn and wound cream made with herbs and oils. It helps keep the skin soft and promotes healing.
Although I always intend to pack sunscreen and bug spray, sometimes I walk off without it. Therefore, I keep a kid-safe, bug repellent wipe and some Badger sunscreen in the kit. There is also a tick remover and an itch relief stick.
Sometimes it’s the crunchy mom needing help. For headaches, I prefer to use arnica over Tylenol. I also keep some tweezers, nail clippers, Q-tips, and pads in the kit. And because they always seem to get lost, there is a tallow-based chapstick from Toups & Co. I also keep some homemade hand sanitizer with the kit.
Everything except the sprays fit nicely into a metal Welly bandaid container. I found the small jars and spray bottles in the travel section at Walmart. I put anything that can melt into a small plastic bag before tossing it in the container.
