Your Focus Needs More Focus
Sometimes we all need a little help focusing on the task at hand. My husband laughs at me when he comes home from work after I’ve been home alone all day. The dryer is open and some of the clothes are folded. The dishwasher is half empty and left standing open along with several cabinet doors. Every light in the house is on. The vacuum is sitting in the very clean living room, but the bedroom hasn’t been touched. It’s like my brain has a million tabs open and they’re all playing music. I will just click through them repeatedly so that I can hear each song for a second or two. Other times, I’m hyper focused and can’t think or talk about anything else until I’ve finished thinking or doing whatever it is that has my attention. There really isn’t a happy medium here.
When I was in college, long before fidget spinners and pencil top fidgets, I had a rock that I kept in my pocket. I found the rock at the creek and it seemed to have a thumb shaped dent in it, so I kept it. During class, I would flip this rock in between my fingers or rub a particular spot on it. This helped me to focus during lectures, but was discrete enough that nobody noticed.
Now I use this focus roller bottle when I need to focus on something, such as writing this blog post. Before sitting down to work, I’ll dab a little on my wrists and put the same oils in the diffuser. Then I’ll sit down to focus on the work at hand. It’s not perfect, but I can definitely notice a difference. Although this post is titled “for kids” adults can benefit from it too.

Using the Focus Roller Bottle for Kids
This roller bottle has a 1% dilution rate, which is perfect for kids 2-10. For kids under 6 leave out the peppermint oil and add a second drop of lavender or vetiver.
Before staring an activity that requires concentration, apply the focus roller bottle to the inside of the wrists, soles of the feet, and the back of the neck.
You can also diffuse the same blend of oils during homework time.
Adults can double the amount of essential oils in the roller bottle by adding two drops of each oil.
Storing the Immunity Essential Oil Roller
Sunlight causes essential oils to lose their effectiveness over time. Consequently, it is best to store them out of direct sunlight.
In addition, it is best not to store essential oils in plastic. They will cause it to deteriorate. Therefore, I recommend storing essential oils in amber or cobalt glass bottles.
Teacher Tips to Help Kids Stay Focused
I have tried it all when it comes to helping kids stay focused. It’s my job after all. This is my fourth year of teaching. I’ve taught fourth grade, second grade, virtual second grade, and now special needs preschool. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to getting kids to sit down and focus on the task before them.
Only put one task or step in front of them at a time.
When presented with the homework for three classes, it’s hard to focus on just one. Put one out and leave the rest out of sight in a folder or backpack. If the task has multiple steps, break it down. Present only one step at a time.
Taking breaks is ok.
Allow for breaks between tasks. Set a timer and when it goes off the break is over. Kids typically have an attention span of their age give or take two minutes. For example, a five year old could range anywhere from three to five minutes for example. During a break encourage your kid to move around. Walk to the bathroom, ten jumping jacks, or run a lap around the yard. The break will depend on what the kid needs. My biggest rule is no screen time during breaks. Kids seem to have difficulty disengaging from the screen. It sucks them in and it’s hard to get them out.
Remove distractions.
Turn off the TV. Have a dedicated work place away from siblings and pets. Put on some noise cancelling headphones. Use a science fair board to block out visual distractions. Some kids enjoy study music, but for others it’s distracting. Figure out what distracts your child and limit it as much as possible.
Let fidgety kids fidget.
Kids weren’t built to sit still. They were built to run and play. Oftentimes, they’ve been confined to a chair or carpet all day. Twenty minutes of recess was likely the only time they were allowed to move freely and burn energy. Allowing them to burn off some energy before starting homework might help them sit still. If they never seem to stop fidgeting try a kick band around the legs of the chair. A kick band allows kids to move without leaving their chair. It keeps their feet busy, so their brain can work.
