We Love Our Anti-Itch Sticks!
One year for Mother’s Day, I made my mom and mother-in-law a gift basket with some essential oil products. One of which was a homemade anti-itch stick made with essential oils. The next time I talked to my mom, she told me how amazing the anti-itch stick was working on her mosquito bites. When I saw my mother-in-law at church the next week she said that my father-in-law was finding it great to use on tick bites. I had been using mine on chigger bites and buffalo gnat bites.
After some time experimenting in the kitchen, I was finally happy with the consistency of the balm. I wanted something like chapstick that was easily thrown in a purse or pocket. It couldn’t be too greasy, but needed to spread easily. After a few less than perfect batches, I found the perfect ratio! Not too greasy, but spreads easily on bites. Won’t melt in your pocket.
When the homemade anti-itch stick isn’t strong enough, I use the itch roller bottle. It is a bit stronger because the oils are more concentrated. This is my go to when the buffalo gnats are bad. I hate buffalo gnats. They swarm your face and get in your nose.
To avoid the bug bites in the first place, try out this homemade bug spray!

- Melt all of the ingredients making sure to stir often.
- When everything is melted, remove it from the heat and mix in 7 drops of each essential oil as quickly as possible. This mixture will harden up quickly.

Using The Homemade Anti-Itch Stick
You can rub this anti-itch stick on mosquito bites, chiggers, tick bites, and buffalo gnats. It does not take much to take care of the bites. I just rub a little anti-itch stick directly on the bite.
Be careful when using this homemade anti-itch stick on a body part that will then be covered by clothing. Make sure to use just as much as needed.
Be careful using this homemade anti-itch stick on skin that is exposed to sunlight. Bergamot is photosensitive, which means it can cause skin irritation when applied before going outside. There is such a small amount in the stick that you should be ok, but use your own judgement. I haven’t had an issue, but that doesn’t mean you won’t.
Tips for Itchy Bug Bites
Run a spoon under hot water and press it on the bite. This helps stop the itchiest mosquito bites.
For chigger bites, cover them with liquid bandage. This suffocates the chigger and stops the itch. If you have already scratched, then this will burn until it dries. Kids may not like it much.
Washing with lye soap can help with any itchy bug bite. Wash the area and allow it to sit for five to ten minutes. Then rinse it thoroughly.
Mama swears that dabbing a bit of alcohol or Listerine on the bug bites will stop the itching. I don’t know if the itching stops, but it does burn enough that you forget about the itching.
