A Goal is a Dream is With a Timeline
Green fields full of cows, hens pecking around the yard, and a garden overflowing with produce would be a homestead dream. I am a dreamer by nature. I’ve filled notebooks with drawings of the perfect barn and plans for a garden that produces everything we need. Although dreams are great, I prefer goals. Goals are just dreams with a timeline.

Rules to Set Homesteading Goals
There are a few rules to follow when setting any goal. When you set homesteading goals keep these in mind to insure success.
Set realistic homesteading goals.
If your goal is to produce all of your own dairy products by the of the year, but you don’t have a barn or a cow, then that probably isn’t realistic. But you could find a place to buy local raw milk and use that to make yogurt or kefir. Although it isn’t the final goal, it is a step towards your big dream.
Set homesteading goals that are specific.
When you set homesteading goals be specific about what you want to accomplish. If my goal is to grow my own vegetables, that leaves a lot of wiggle room. Does a single tomato plant count or do I need to grow ever single vegetable that I need for the year? Be specific about what you want to accomplish.
Set homesteading goals with a deadline.
Goals come with a deadline. If there isn’t a deadline, then it will get put off. Make sure you write this deadline down someplace where you will see it and be reminded of it frequently. Hold yourself accountable.
Set homesteading goals with baby steps.
Big changes don’t happen overnight. My goal is to make all of our own baked goods. That is a large undertaking with a lot of learning. Therefore, I broke it down into specific things. This last year, I learned to make English muffins and crunchy bread. Although I don’t yet make every baked good that we consume, I’ve taken a baby step in the right direction.

Now Let’s Set Homesteading Goals
Step one is to pick a goal. Keep in mind that it needs to be realistic.
Next you need to break it down into baby steps. Remember no step is too small.
Then you’ll need to set some deadlines. Give each baby step a due date. Make sure you are being realistic about the timeline. If you know that you are traveling a lot this summer, don’t make a lot of deadlines for the summer.
Now write down the goal, baby steps, and dates somewhere that you’ll see them often. Having a constant reminder will keep you motivated.
