Does the laundry mountain overwhelm you? Although laundry is the never ending chore, it doesn’t have to consume your weekend or even pile up. Give this sanity saving laundry routine a try. I promise you will feel less stressed out about the laundry and I bet the mountain of clothes disappears too.

Maybe Nudists Aren’t So Crazy

Once I got married, I quickly realized how much laundry two people could make in a week. Our laundry basket was overflowing 6 days a week it seemed. Washing it all took the entire weekend and we had to walk around the sorted piles on the floor. Saturday was nothing but switching out the laundry all day long. And heaven forbid something come up that day because then the laundry chore turned into an insurmountable task. I began to think that maybe nudists weren’t so crazy after all. Just having to wash a load of towels and sheets sounded like a pretty great idea. Although it might be impractical if cooking bacon I suppose.

Sort the laundry.

Get the laundry sorted out so that it is easy to throw in a load. For me this happens a couple times a week or whenever I notice the hamper getting full. I recommend using a laundry sorter or baskets for this, so that you don’t have piles of dirty laundry on the floor.

Put one load in the washer every night.

Before going to bed, put a load of laundry in the washer. This is part of my daily reset routine. By doing this every night, you’ll guarantee that the dirty laundry never piles up. If possible set a delay on the washer, so that the wet clothes don’t sit in there very long. My washer normally runs around 3am, so it is done by 5am when I get up. This is also a time when nobody is showering, so hot water isn’t an issue.

Dry it every morning.

When you wake up, put the clothes in the dryer, on the clothesline, or on the drying rack. Make it a habit. For me, this happens as soon as I take the dog out to go potty. This gives the air dried things time to dry out while I’m at work.

Put everything away in the evening.

Fold, hang, and put away everything in the evening. Stand at the dryer and fold everything. Never put clean laundry in a laundry basket to deal with later. This will keep the clean laundry from piling up. One load doesn’t take long to put away especially if everybody is responsible for their own things.

Sanity Saving Laundry Routine Tools of the Trade

Laundry Sorter

We got a laundry sorter as a bridal shower gift and it has been well used ever since. It stays in the mudroom by the washing machine. It can hold lots of laundry in the four different sections. This makes it super easy to decide which load to toss in next.

Drying Rack

When it’s too cold to dry clothes outside, I put them on a drying rack under the fan. I figure if I am paying for the heat to be on in the house, I might as well take full advantage of that. Saves energy, money, and your clothing.

Wool Dryer Balls

It’s time to ditch the chemical filled dryer sheets. Replace them with some wool dryer balls. If you still want that clean laundry smell, put some Tumble and Tidy oil on them. The dryer balls will reduce your drying time too. I’ve ditched any sort of fabric softener or dryer sheet for years. The dryer balls seem to do just fine.

Soap Sheets

I love my laundry soap sheets from Revive. They are a toxin free way to get the laundry clean. They take up hardly any space in the cabinet and don’t come with a big plastic jug. Sometimes they don’t dissolve well in cold water. I’ve found that putting the sheet of soap in a delicate bag solves that problem.
