Naturally Strip Laundry

November 25, 2023 by morgansfarmhouse Leave a Comment

Does your laundry have a funny smell even when it’s clean? Do your clothes still look dingy? Perhaps there is a buildup of minerals and products.  You can naturally strip laundry to remove any build up. Your towels will be more absorbent. White sheets will be bright again. The laundry will smell fresh again.

What’s That Smell?

After moving into our new house, our laundry started to smell really bad. My husband blamed the natural detergent. I blamed his sweaty work clothes. Since the detergent hadn’t changed and neither had the sweat, it had to be the hard water. I noticed how quickly the hard water deposits built up on faucets and appliances. Therefore, I assumed it was on the clothing too. Well water may taste better, but you’ll pay the price.

Since washing the laundry wasn’t getting rid of the smell, I decided to try laundry stripping. I wanted to learn how to naturally strip laundry, though. I tossed everything in the bathtub and crossed my fingers. Sure enough, the water was disgusting and the clothing no longer smelled like B.O. I was shocked by the amount of build up on our clothing. No wonder it smelled bad. Now anytime things start to smell funny, the laundry gets stripped.

Why Naturally Strip Laundry?

Over time, detergent and fabric softener leaves a residue on your laundry. On top of that, hard water will cause mineral build up. This can leave your laundry smelly and dingy. Towels will become less absorbent too. When you naturally strip your laundry, it will strip away the residue and mineral build up, so that your laundry will be fresh once again.

I do not strip the laundry on a regular basis because I don’t find that it needs it. Although, when I notice the sheets looking more ivory than white or the shirts smelling funny that means it’s time to fill the tub.

How to Naturally Strip Laundry

Ingredients

½ cup Oxygen Brightener

¼ cup Super Washing Soda

1 cap or sheet Laundry Detergent

Instructions

  1. First fill the bathtub halfway with the hottest water possible. White the water is running add in ½ cup oxygen brightener, ¼ cup super washing soda, and the recommended detergent for one load of laundry.
  2. Once everything has dissolved, you can start adding in the laundry. When you naturally strip laundry, I still recommend sorting the colors.
  3. Use a broom handle or your arm to stir the laundry every couple of hours. Allow it to soak for at least 6 hours. I’ll often let it sit overnight.
  4. Then drain and rinse the laundry before running it through the machine as normal. On rare occasions I’ve had to strip it twice to get rid of strong smells.
