Taco Tuesday is a staple in our house, so homemade taco seasoning is a must. When in doubt we brown some beef and grab the tortillas. It makes for a simple dinner that everybody can have just the way they like and the leftovers make for an easy lunch option too. If you have 2 minutes of time, you can make up this delicious taco seasoning.

Taco Night!
When we first got married, my cooking abilities left much to be desired. This meant that we repeated meals often. Tacos were one of those meals. We had them at least once a week for the first 3 years of marriage. And I don’t mean that sometimes it was tacos and other times it was a quesadilla. Nor did we have all the fancy fixin’s to go on top. There was a tortilla with meat, beans, and cheese rolled up inside. But it kept us full and happy, which is all that really mattered.

Is Homemade Taco Seasoning Better?
Have you ever read the back of a taco seasoning packet? If so you’ll have found things like cornstarch, natural colors, potato starch, caramel coloring, sugar, and preservatives. What exactly are natural colors? And if they are natural, why are they listed as an ingredient? My homemade taco seasoning has none of that. Just dried herbs and spices. And the color is a byproduct of the real ingredients, which means it is actually natural.
Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe
Ingredients
¼ cup chili powder
3 tablespoons cumin
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon pepper
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon oregano
Instructions
- In a mason jar, add ¼ cup chili powder, 3 tablespoons cumin, 1 tablespoon salt, 1 tablespoon pepper, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 2 teaspoons onion powder, 2 teaspoons paprika, and 1 teaspoon oregano.
- Then put a lid on the jar and give it a good shake to combine the spice.
- When you are ready to make tacos add 3 tablespoons of homemade taco seasonings and ⅔ cup water to a pound of browned ground beef. Allow it to simmer off most of the liquid before serving.
Using Homemade Taco Seasoning
Homemade taco seasoning can be used to season a variety of meat. As a rule of thumb, I use 3 tablespoons of seasoning per pound of meat. Once the meat is cooked, add in 3 tablespoons of seasoning and ⅔ cup water. Then give it a stir and allow it to simmer until the water has evaporated.
This seasoning works on steak or chicken strips to make fajitas. Or you can shred the chicken to make quesadillas. My favorite is the classic ground beef. If you are making bean dip add a pinch of the taco seasoning to it.
