Just Enough to Wet the Chips
I’ve never liked spicy food. The amount of heat to be considered spicy in my world is very minimal. A couple of good shakes of pepper is all it really takes. This means I rarely eat chili, especially when made by other people. It’s just too spicy for me. Growing up, I just thought that I didn’t like chili. Turns out that it was just too spicy.
My parents would laugh at me on chili night. I would fill my bowl with corn chips, add just enough chili to get the chips wet, and then cover it in cheese. I didn’t really like chili, but I loved chips and cheese.
After getting married my husband requested chili for dinner. I decided to finally make a chili that I liked. It needed to be very mild. My homemade chili seasoning was created to be mild yet flavorful. So now, I’ve finally found a chili that I enjoy and others do too.

Why Make Homemade Chili Seasoning?
Have you ever read the back of a chili seasoning packet? If so you’ll have found things like cornstarch, natural colors, potato starch, caramel coloring, sugar, and preservatives. What exactly are natural colors? And if they are natural, why are they listed as an ingredient? My homemade chili seasoning has none of that. Just dried herbs and spices. And the color is a byproduct of the real ingredients, which means it is actually natural.

Using Homemade Chili Seasoning
If you are not making chili in the Crock Pot then you should definitely start. Your house will smell amazing all day and then you’ll have a hardy dinner when you’re exhausted that night. We love Crock Pot chili. With some meat, beans, tomatoes, and homemade chili seasoning it really hits the spot.
Perhaps it’s too warm for a bowl of chili right now. But what about over a hot dog? See now it’s not too warm for chili afterall. For chili dogs I tend to use half the beans, but otherwise leave everything else the same.
If you want a bit more spice in your homemade chili seasoning, try adding some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
