In With the Good
A couple years ago, I started to question the ingredients in everything. It started with body products, then cleaners, and now food. So consider this a warning, once you start you can’t stop.
Ok, now that you’re ready to take a step down this slippery slope let’s talk about my decision to take the first step. It all started with reading the back of the shampoo bottle. I discovered lots of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. After some Google searches, I found out that most of them were really bad for you. The spark of curiosity caught hold and there was no turning back. I have always been one to question things and research them until I am blue in the face. When I find a problem, I must also find a solution. Pretty soon I was buying essential oils and castile soaps. When I ran out of my normal products, I would replace them with all-natural products that I made myself.
After that, there was no stopping me. I made my husband crazy reading all the labels. I replaced the dish soap, dryer sheets, mouthwash, lotion, and candles. When I bought anything at the store, I would stand there reading the labels for twenty minutes before making a decision. He was patient, but sometimes I thought he wanted to throw something in the cart and move on.
Some of the changes were more difficult than others, but they eventually became the new normal. For example, castile soap makes my skin feel weird. At first it really bothered me, but now I barely notice. Another switch I made was my lip balm. Did you know that you can get addicted to Carmex? Me neither, until I did. A quick Google search confirmed that you can in fact get addicted to Carmex. After that I switched over to Burt’s Bees lip balm. I liked the texture of it more than the glossy feeling all the others had. In fact, the hardest part about this DIY was the right texture. I finally found it though and I’m about to share it with you!

What Makes Homemade Burt’s Bees Lip Balm So Good?
Beeswax helps give this lip balm it’s Burt’s Bees texture. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties to help keep your lips healthy. It also creates a protective layer to protect chapped lips and seal in the moisture.
Shea butter softens the skin and offers a little bit of sun protection. It can be replaced with cocoa butter if you prefer a chocolatey scent.
Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties. Plus as any good oil will do, it moisturizes those dry lips. I’ve always got a jar of coconut oil hanging around. It’s good for cooking and for body products.
Homemade Burt’s Bees Lip Balm Recipe
Ingredients
2 tablespoons beeswax
1 tablespoon shea butter
1 ½ teaspoons coconut oil
20-30 drops essential oils
Instructions
- In a double boiler, melt 2 tablespoons of beeswax, 1 tablespoon of shea butter, and 1 ½ teaspoons of coconut oil.
- When the ingredients have melted, remove it from the heat and add 20-30 drops of essential oils. Stir everything together, but move quickly.
- Use a pipette to transfer the lip balm into chapstick tubes or tins. I suggest setting the empty tubes up on some parchment paper, just in case you have a spill.
- Allow the homemade Burt’s Bees lip balm to cool before capping it to avoid condensation.
Oil Combinations for Homemade Burt’s Bees Lip Balm
Peppermint
Peppermint oil makes the homemade lip balm taste and feel just like Burt’s Bees original lip balm. The peppermint is perfect for cooling chapped lips and is my personal favorite.
Vanilla Lavender
Lavender is soothing, smells great and has many benefits for the skin. It’s also gentle enough to use on the sensitive skin on your lips. The vanilla is soothing and brings a calming smell to the lip balm. This blend is safe for kids. Add 10 drops of each oil to the homemade lip balm.
Orange Dreamsicle
This blend of vanilla and orange reminds me of summers by the pool. The orange oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Do be careful using citrus oils before going in the sun. They are photosensitive and cause skin sensitivity. Add 10 drops of each oil to the homemade lip balm.
Pumpkin Spice
Add 5 drops of each clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger to the homemade lip balm. Clove has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Nutmeg helps with mental alternes. Cinnamon and ginger have antibacterial properties too. But we all know this blend is all about the fall vibes.
Margarita
Add 10 drops each of orange and lime. The orange and lime oils have anti-inflammatory properties, but again this blend is all about the smells. Do be careful using citrus oils before going in the sun. They are photosensitive and cause skin sensitivity.
