Are You One of Those People Now?
For several years, I was an essential oil skeptic. After finding Revive and finally being able to afford some oils, I fell in love. I’m now a believer in essential oils and natural remedies despite what I may have said when I was younger. I use the immunity roller daily during the school year. In the summer when I need relief from bug bites, I reach for my oils. The same goes for a headache or allergies.
When I used to travel home to see my family, I would pack up my oils to take along. My brother came down to my bedroom one evening as I was filling the diffuser. He sarcastically asked, “Are you one of those people now?” complete with eye roll. I grinned and said of course. He poked fun at me, but my essential oil use has multiplied. Almost anything that goes on my skin is made from an essential oil.
My favorite way to use essential oils is by diffusing them. Unfortunately they are not good for cats, so there are very few that I can diffuse at home around Kitten-Eyed Joe. So, I diffuse in the car and at school. There’s a diffuser in every room of the house and everywhere I spend a significant amount of time.

Wait…You Clean the Diffuser?
That’s right! It is important that you clean your diffusers. This prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew. Plus it prevents the build up of hard water and essential oil residue. Don’t worry though, an ultrasonic diffuser only needs to be cleaned about once a week if used daily. Regularly cleaning the diffuser will help it last longer as well.
White vinegar is the best for removing hard water build up. This is a constant struggle at my house because of the well water. If it has been a while since the last cleaning, I will allow the vinegar solution to sit in the diffuser and soak for a bit before running. This loosens the hard water build up.
How to Clean an Ultrasonic Diffuser with Vinegar
- Start by emptying the diffuser. You don’t want any leftover oils or water in there when you start cleaning.
- Next fill the diffuser up halfway with vinegar. Then top it off with water.
- Then let it run until it is empty. My husband can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so put it in the bathroom with the fan running and the door closed.
- When it is complete, use a cotton swab dipped in vinegar to clean around the edges.
- When it is clean, rinse it out with fresh water and allow it to dry completely.
How to Clean an Ultrasonic Diffuser with Alcohol
If you absolutely can’t stand the smell of vinegar, you can use rubbing alcohol to clean an ultrasonic diffuser instead.
- Start by emptying the diffuser. You don’t want any leftover oils or water in there when you start cleaning.
- Next use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the inside of the diffuser. Avoid putting it on that metal bit at the bottom.
- When the diffuser is clean, use a damp cloth to wipe out the diffuser and allow it to dry completely.
