The Struggle of the Switch
Change is never easy, especially in our house. As a little girl I would cry when I got new glasses, even though I knew they were exactly the same as the last pair. Although I no longer pitch a fit, I still prefer things to stay the same. My husband is no better than I am. He was so upset at the idea of a dog, he almost pulled his beard out.
After learning about the effects that chemical cleaners have on our bodies, I was ready to welcome change. If it had been up to me, I would have tossed out the disinfecting wipes and toilet bowl cleaner immediately. My husband wasn’t ready to dive in though. He can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so he struggled with many of my natural swaps. Eventually I found other recipes and we finally made the switch. Slow and steady as it was.

About the DIY Sink and Tub Scrub
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a great cleaner. It is abrasive enough to remove the soap scum and grime. It also works as a great deodorizer. This can come in handy in the kitchen and the bathroom.
Citric Acid
Citric acid is a good degreaser. This makes it perfect for cleaning in the kitchen.
Essential Oils
Lemon essential oil is my go to for this recipe. Any citrus oil will help remove any stuck on gunk and leave the sink smelling clean too!
DIY Sink and Tub Scrub Recipe
Ingredients
½ cup citric acid
1 ½ cup baking soda
10 drop essential oils
Instructions
- Add ½ cup citric acid, 1 ½ cup baking soda, and 10 drops of essential oil to a jar. Some people avoid putting it in glass because any moisture can cause a reaction that can cause the glass to shatter. I’ve never had an issue with storing it in glass personally.
- Give it a good shake to mix up the oil. Put an airtight lid or parmesan lid on the top before storing it.
Using the DIY Sink and Tub Scrub
Sprinkle a bit of the DIY sink and tub scrub on a wet surface. Then use a brush or sponge to remove the grime. Rinse it off with some clean water.
You can also put some in the toilet bowl before scrubbing it with a toilet brush. I do this to help with hard water build up.
After scrubbing the kitchen sink, sprinkle some into the garbage disposal. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to help deodorize the disposal.
