My Brain Might Explode
When I was younger and complained of a headache my Mama would always respond with, “My head would hurt too if it looked like that.” Now as an adult, it is all I can do to keep from saying it any time somebody complains of a headache. Even though I know it’s not something I should say, the thought always crosses my mind.
Heachaches typically plague me when my hormones are high. Unfortunately some turn into migraines. I always reach for natural remedies for a headache first. If I can chug some water, take a nap, and use a remedy then most of the time I can fight one off without medication.

Natural Remedies for a Headache: Essential Oils
My first line of defense for a headache is a headache balm made with essential oils. It works really well on tension headaches. Just rub a bit on both temples and maybe the base of your skull.
One of the other natural remedies for a headache that I make using essential oils is a headache roller bottle. This is a bit stronger than the headache balm. I apply it in the same way. I find this is helpful for migraines too. I’ll also roll some behind my ears because it seems to help.
If you are able to diffuse then give peppermint or lavender a try. For some people diffusing is very helpful, but for others it can trigger a migraine or make the headache worse. Give it a try to see if it helps, but know that it’s not for everybody.
Natural Remedies for a Headache: Homeopathy
For tension headaches reach for Kali Phosphoricum. But since I can’t always identify what kind of headache is coming on, I often go with a blend instead of a single ingredient.
I love Hyland’s Headache Relief blend. It works just as well as ibuprofen. I like that it requires no thought on my end. When I need headache relief, thinking isn’t really on the agenda.
When it comes to migraines, I struggled to find any natural remedies. Then I found Hyland’s Migraine Relief. I can’t sing its praises enough. It works on migraines, especially if you catch them as they are just starting.
Natural Remedies for a Headache: Herbs
One of my favorite natural remedies for a headache is a willow bark tincture. It has the same effect as aspirin. We keep it on hand at all times. I’ll buy the dry herb and then make up a large batch to last the year.
Featherfew, or feverfew, has been used to treat headaches for hundreds of years. You can take it as a tincture or as a tea. It can even prevent headaches, so it might be worth taking daily if you get frequent headaches.
Curcumin is the active component of turmeric. Research is still very limited, but science is starting to show that turmeric can be an effective treatment for headaches and migraines. You can often find turmeric capsules at the store, but a tincture would work as well.
