Seed Spitting Contest!
When I was little my mom would serve us watermelon outside on the patio. I’m sure it was to avoid a mess indoors, but it lended itself to many seed spitting contests. My brother and I would see who could spit the furthest into the yard, highest into the air, and even the most seeds at a time. Once in a while my mom would join in our shenanigans. I’m surprised we didn’t have volunteer plants growing all over the yard.
When my mom’s side of the family got together, the seed spitting contests were a family affair. My uncles, mom, and papa would all be standing at the edge spitting seeds into the grass or river. On time my mom took things to a whole new level.
She decided that she was going to get her younger brother with a face full of watermelon. She succeeded, but then it was time for payback. He chased her all over the yard shoving watermelon in her face. When they ran out of watermelon or called a truce, I can’t remember which, they were both covered in sticky watermelon. It has since become a family tradition. If a watermelon is served, one of them is going to start a watermelon fight.

How to Cut a Watermelon for a Party
The first step is to remove the rind. This is super easy once you know how to do it. Use a large, sharp knife for best results.
- First slice off both ends of the watermelon.
- Next stand it up on end and slice off the sides starting at the top and cutting down.
- Then flip the watermelon over and do the same from the other side. This should leave you with a rindless watermelon.
- Now lay the watermelon back down and cut it into 1 inch thick slices.
- Finally, use a cookie cutter to cut shapes out of the large slices. Smaller cookie cutters are better because they make bite sized pieces. I’ve also found metal cookie cutters to work best for this.
Secret of How to Cut a Watermelon without a Mess
I used to hate cutting up a watermelon because it would mean that I had to wipe down the counters and everything sitting on them. Plus I would most likely need to mop the floor. Given, I’m a messy cook, but even that was too much for me.
I discovered that by placing a kitchen towel or some paper towels under and around the cutting board prevents a big sticky mess. The juices are soaked up before going all over the place. Works like a charm! Sometimes, I will even take a paper towel and wipe down the cutting board between steps. This also helps keep the juicy mess at bay.
