Minutes of Prep and Hours of Play
Last year, I made a large batch of homemade gingerbread playdough for my preschool class. This no-cook recipe takes only minutes to prepare, but the kids played with it for hours. Those are my favorite activities. If it takes me more time to prepare the activity than it takes for them to get bored, I throw that idea out. We kept the dough in an airtight container when it wasn’t being played with and it lasted several weeks. Many hours were spent making cookies and decorating houses. Plus the room smelled amazing!

Homemade Gingerbread Playdough Swaps
Any sort of cooking oil can be used instead of olive oil. Vegetable oil and avocado oil are my preferred swaps because they do not have a strong odor. Fractionated coconut oil would also work, but the dough may have a bit of a coconut scent.
If you do not have the spices on hand, then you can trade them out for essential oils and some food coloring. You can add 5 drops of ginger, 3 drops of cinnamon, 2 drops of nutmeg, and 2 drops of clove essential oils. By mixing red, yellow, and blue food coloring you’ll get a brown color. How many drops of each will determine what shade of brown. I suggest starting with one of each and adding from there. ‘

Homemade Gingerbread Playdough Gift Set
Homemade gingerbread playdough makes a great Chrismtas gift for all the little kids on your list. With 12 niblings (that’s the word for nieces and nephews) and another on the way, Christmas can get expensive. But a batch of homemade gingerbread playdough with some accessories makes for a budget friendly gift that will keep everybody happy once presents are opened.
These plastic jars come with large and small jars. The larger one is perfect for a ball of dough and the small one is great for accessories. I like to add a little homemade label to the outside, but you could easily decorate the jar with festive stickers instead.
Then comes the fun part. Accessories! Cookie cutters are a must. Houses and people are my go to with this scent. Rolling pins are nice, but if you can’t find any they are easy to make. Just cut a wooden dowel into short pieces and sand the ends. Beads, pipe cleaners, string, cut up straws, googly eyes, buttons, and table scatter can work as the icing and decorations. Oftentimes, Hobby Lobby has mini candy garlands. If cut apart, it makes for the perfect decor on a gingerbread house. Mini silicone spatulas are great for flipping the “cookies.” Let your imagination go wild with the accessories.
A holiday tin, metal lunchbox, stocking, or box is the perfect way to hold all of the pieces. A plastic or vinyl placemat is useful to keep the mess contained. Small tins, travel containers, or condiment cups are great to hold and organize the accessories.
