The Kitty Ate the Tinsel
I love Christmas and unfortunately so does our cat, Kitten-Eyed Joe. We have always bought a live tree so that we don’t have to store an artificial tree. Joe thinks that the tree stand is a giant water bowl just for him. In true cat form, he refuses to use any other water bowl during the season. When we take it down, he boycotts water from his actual bowl for several days. So although he may not eat tinsel, he sure loves Christmas tree water.
Because of his ridiculous obsession, all of the ornaments on our tree must be kitty proof. Although he normally stays at the bottom and just drinks the water, he has been known to climb it, if the needles aren’t spikey enough. We pick a tree by how spikey the needles are, which we realize is silly. Finding cat proof ornaments that I like has been difficult. I started with a giant box of shatterproof ones from Walmart, but they aren’t really that rustic style I’m looking for. So I’ve taken to making ornaments.
These DIY mason jar lid ornaments are perfect because they are so simple to make and durable. Plus I’ve finally found something to do with all of those used lids. I can’t be the only one with a basket overflowing with used lids. By switching up the fabric, I’m able to make a DIY mason jar lid ornament to match any theme. I can even make them to match the rag ball ornaments. I’m slowly finding my style and while I do, I find it most cost effective to make things myself, instead of buying everything new each year.

Recycling with the DIY Mason Jar Lid Ornament
I love this DIY mason jar lid ornament because it can be made with things found around the house. Old lids, fabric scraps, and leftover string. The fabric scrap doesn’t need to be big. It’s only the size of a sticky note.
I used lids that had already been used, so they couldn’t be used again. I couldn’t bear to throw them away because I knew they’d be good for something. Then voila, the idea for something arrived in the form of this adorable farmhouse style ornament.
Although I used a jute cord, you can use any string or ribbon. Christmas kitchen twine would also be darling. Even some ribbons would work.
How to Make a DIY Mason Jar Lid Ornament
Supplies
Mason Jar Ring
Fabric
Hot Glue
Instructions
- Start by cutting your fabric into a 3 inch square. You should do this while your hot glue gun warms up.
- Cover the top of the lid with glue and quickly press the fabric square on quickly.
- Turn it over and use hot glue to wrap the fabric around the lid.
- Squirt some glue on the inside of the ring before pressing the lid into place. You’ll have to be quick.
- Then take a 10 inch piece of jute cord and tie it in a loop. Glue the knot to the ring, so that it can hang on the tree.
Variations of the DIY Mason Jar Lid Ornament
Although the DIY mason jar lid ornament is pretty as it is, you could always do more. You could add a monogram with some heat press vinyl. A silhouette of a christmas tree or nativity scene would also be cute. Or you could add a holiday phrase.
If vinyl isn’t your thing, you could add a bow, some ribbon, or even a fancy sticker. Really the possibilities are endless. If it can be hot glued to the lid, then it will work.
