Cookie Currency
This recipe came from a family whose kids I babysat. The little boy discovered that people were willing to trade things for his mom’s cookies. So he would negotiate deals at school. His mom discovered that he was using cookies as currency. Needless to say, these chocolate chip cookies are that good.

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Real Ingredients
We have been working to move away from prepackaged meals and mixes and replace them with real ingredients. So although these chocolate chip cookies may be full of sugar and butter, I think that’s better than preservatives, vegetable oils, and high fructose corn syrup.
We purchase our flour, sugars, salt, and chocolate chips in bulk from Azure Standard. When we go to Sam’s Club, I stock up on butter and baking soda. My mom makes fun of how much baking soda we keep around this house, but we go through it quickly between baking and cleaning. The eggs come from our chickens. I’ve found it to be much more cost effective to make my own vanilla extract. In June each year, I’ll start a large batch. That way it is ready in time for holiday baking and gift giving.
Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
1 ½ sticks softened butter
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
2 cups chocolate chips
Instructions
- First cream together 1 ½ sticks butter, 1 cup brown sugar, and ½ cup sugar. I use the KitchenAid for this, but you can totally do it by hand too.
- Then add 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon baking, and ½ teaspoon salt. Mix it all together.
- While the mixer is on low, add in 2 cups of flour slowly. I add it in half cup increments.
- Finally, it’s time to add in 2 cups of chocolate chips. Mix until everything is well combined, but do not overmix.
- Roll the dough into 1 ½ inch balls and place them on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
- Bake them at 375 degrees for 7 ½ minutes. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet while the next batch is in the oven. This is the trick to getting them cooked to perfection.
Freezing Chocolate Chip Cookies
This recipe makes a lot of chocolate chip cookies. And although we can eat them all, we probably shouldn’t. So instead I freeze the dough. Once I have the dough rolled into balls and placed on parchment, I put the pan in the freezer to flash freeze. When they are frozen, I can toss them all into a plastic bag to keep in the freezer. This makes for a wonderful afternoon treat later. I can pull out just enough for a little treat.
Often I will eat the frozen dough balls right from the freezer. They are just as delicious frozen. Before you come at me for eating raw cookie dough, if I have to die then cookie dough seems like a good way to go.
