Here is our chicken tractor tour! I am in love with our beautiful, white, A-frame chicken tractor. There is plenty of room for our flock and it keeps them safe from the many predators. Beautiful and functional, what more could a crazy chicken lady want?

You’re Only Getting One
My husband finally agreed to build a chicken tractor, so that I could keep a flock of hens. I knew just exactly what chicken tractor I wanted. The Green Willow Homestead had the most gorgeous building plans. So we went to Menard’s for supplies and he started building. What he thought might take a couple weeks turned into a very time consuming project. The angles and cutting the metal were enough to do him in. Once it was completed he informed me that he would never build me another chicken tractor. But that’s ok because I’m so thrilled with the one he built.

Chicken Tractor Tour
We built the Mega Chicken Tractor. Since it’s the only one he plans to build, I’m glad I went big. It can hold 15-20 birds, which would be more than enough for our family and perhaps a roadside stand someday. It is 8 feet wide, 10 feet long, and 7 feet tall. I can comfortably stand inside the run to take care of the feed and water.
The Coop
The coop part of the tractor has 4 nesting boxes. They can be accessed from the outside for cleaning or collecting eggs. There are also several areas to roost safely inside the coop. We did not add the roosts initially, but it has been fairly simple to go back in and add them after the fact. The wire floor means that most of the dropping fall through. I’ve noticed that the droppings tend to collect in the far corners. Since I can not get inside the coop it can be difficult to clean. The ramp is on an automatic door opener. The Chicken Guard Pro 2023 is the only one that we have found that will lift the ramp.
The Run
The run provides the chickens with 80 square feet of grass. Since we move them on a daily basis they always have fresh bugs to eat and ground to peck. About half of the run is below the coop which helps to provide shade and protection from the rain. We hang their feeder and water bucket from the top beam, so that they move with the tractor when we pull it across the yard. Last summer we also added a sun shade and a solar powered fan to help keep them cool. Since our yard is not at all flat, we had to staple pond liner around the bottom to keep the chickens from slipping out.
Why We Love Our Chicken Tractor
Lots of space
We love that our chicken tractor provides our birds with lots of room to roam. It has all the benefits of free ranging our birds without the worries.
Sturdy
We get some pretty nasty storms with high winds. This chicken tractor holds up very well to the storms. It doesn’t shake in the wind and it keeps our birds safe inside the coop.
Easy to move
We use the John Deere tractor to move the chicken tractor most of the time. It is very heavy. We have hooks on the front that we connect to a chain on the tractor. Of course that makes it really easy to move. But when necessary, I can even push the chicken tractor by hand.
Predator protection
We have lots of predators on our property. There was a family of foxes, a nest of skunks, racoons for days, and more snakes than the world really needs. So far we have yet to have any issues with predators in the chicken tractor.
Minimal cleaning
Because we move the chicken tractor to fresh grass each day, there is very little cleaning that must be done. I’ll spray and scrub the coop about once a month, except during the winter. Otherwise it is mostly adding bedding to the nesting boxes and scrubbing the water bucket.
