Using Essential Oils Safely

Do you want to use essential oils, but you’re nervous about their safety? We will cover using essential oils safely so that you can enjoy the smells and benefits of those tempting little bottles. I promise they aren’t nearly as scary as the medicine cabinet.

Do I Have to Join the Oil Ladies?

When I first got married, essential oils were all the rage at my church. Everybody was using them. That meant all the women at church were sorted into team Young Living or team DoTerra. I listened to them talk about using essential oils and I really wanted to give them a try, but I did not want to sell them. And I had no clue what team to pick. Both said the other was a fraud and both said anything but their team was subpar. So I did not jump on the bandwagon.

A couple years later, I found Revive. It seemed like a safe way to try the essential oils with joining the oil ladies. The owner was an escapee and provided great quality oils without the MLM or cult-like qualities. It’s been several years and I’m still a happy customer.

Using Essential Oils Safely Around Pets

Pets are like family and nobody wants to poison their furry friends. While having indoor pets does limit your ability to diffuse, you can still use them in other ways.

Cats, birds, and reptiles are the most sensitive to oils. Diffusing tea tree or eucalyptus around them is an absolute no. Do not diffuse in the same room as a reptile or bird. When using a diffuser around a cat, make sure the cat has the option to get away from it. This is why I run one diffuser at a time in my house. That way Kitten Eyed Joe can always find a room to escape to if he needs.

Dogs are a bit easier. Make sure that they also are able to leave the room you are diffusing in. Their noses are much stronger than ours, so I can understand how the smell could be overpowering.

Another important part about using essential oils safely around pets is to make sure that the bottles are put away where your pets can’t get into them. Oils are very concentrated and more likely to cause harm when undiluted.

Using Essential Oils Safely Around Kids

Using essential oils safely around kids is much easier than with pets. For babies under 3 months old, no oils should be used. After that diffusing and even topical applications are safe with the proper dilution.

Some oils are hot, which means they will hurt if applied directly to the skin without diluting first. Cinnamon is a common one. Be sure to read about the safety of each oil before using it on your child. After age 10, all essential oils are generally safe to use.

Once again, keep the oils out of reach. Ingesting them or getting them in their eyes will not be fun for anyone.

Using Essential Oils Safely Around the Home

Essential oils can be used to make cleaners, soaps, lotions, and itch relief. These applications are generally very diluted making them much safer. While I would not diffuse tea tree oil around my cat, I still use it to prevent mold in my shower for example.

Make sure hot oils are always diluted before applying them to the skin or hair. Even diluted, you should not use them on sensitive areas. Your nose will burn if you accidentally scratch it after cleaning up spilled oregano oil. Ask me how I know.

Bear in mind that while all oils are generally considered safe for adults, there are times to take extra precautions. Even my very holistically minded OB/GYN was strict about using essential oils safely while pregnant and breastfeeding.
