How to Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh Naturally

For a room with so much soap, you would think that the bathroom would smell better. Unfortunately that is not the case. Mold, mildew, and you know what else all make for a less than desirable aroma. I’ll teach you how to keep your bathroom smelling fresh naturally.

We Flush, But the Cat Doesn’t

I share a bathroom with a man and a cat. Yes, my cat uses the toilet just like people. The only difference is that he doesn’t flush. We did start to teach him to flush, but found out that he enjoys the bubbles too much. As cool as it would be, we don’t want him flushing the toilet to chase the bubbles repeatedly all day. The only problem is that it leaves a less than desirable smell.

Whenever we have company over, we remind them to leave the lid open for the cat. Then we apologize in advance just in case they have to flush for the cat. Having a cat that uses the potty is one of my favorite things ever. It sparks curiosity in anybody that hears about it.

How to Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh Naturally with Linens

Wet towels can quickly become musty smelling. If your bathroom doesn’t have a good airflow they will not properly dry when you hang them up. The same goes for your shower liner if it is  fabric. Once the musty smell sets in, it will be difficult to remove. There are some things you can keep your bathroom linens smelling fresh.

Open the bathroom window. If you have the ability to open a bathroom window it will do wonders for the room. The fresh air will help prevent mold and mildew and the linens will dry properly.

Turn on the air vent. While you shower, turn on the vent. It will help control the humidity which can be the cause of the musty smell. I leave mine on with the door open for about an hour after I shower. This helps pull fresh air into the room and gets rid of the humidity.

Change the towels regularly. I am guilty of using the same towel all week. About Wednesday it starts to have a musty smell because my bathroom does not have good airflow. By changing the towels twice a week, I am able to prevent the yucky towel smell.

How to Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh Naturally with Plants

Plants are nature’s air purifiers. They know how to keep your bathroom smelling fresh naturally because that’s what God made them to do. The type of plant you pick will depend on the level of light in the room. For a bathroom without light you may have to pick a plant that can stay temporarily, like eucalyptus. You could even hang plants in the shower if you wish. It has become particularly popular recently.

How to Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh Naturally with Oils

Since my bathroom has no windows, which means no airflow and no light I like to use essential oils to keep my bathroom smelling fresh. Some of my favorites to use in the bathroom are tea tree, eucalyptus, and lemongrass. Because of Kitten Eyed Joe I can not diffuse tea tree or eucalyptus, but I can use them in other ways.

Diffuse essential oils. I love to run the diffuser in every room of the house. In the bathroom I like to use citrus oils because they help with mold and mildew and leave it smelling clean.

Spray homemade poo spray before you go. Make up a bottle of homemade poo spray to keep handy. Spray 3-5 pumps in the toilet bowl before going to the bathroom. It will create a film over the water that will hold in the smell.

Put a few drops in the toilet paper. When you put out a fresh roll of toilet paper or even the spares, put a couple drops of oil in the roll. I like to use lemongrass for this. Just one or two drops on the inside of the cardboard roll will make the bathroom smell fresh.

Use air vent filters. You can buy a package of air vent filters relatively cheap. Before tucking them in the air vent, put a few drops of oil on them. I’ve also sprayed them with linen spray.
