PJ’s are for Bedtime
I did not own sweatpants until college. I always hesitated to wear them outside of the house. In fact, I think it has only happened three times. And two of those were spirit days for school. My mom always taught me that pj’s were for bedtime. Once you got up, it was time to get dressed and ready for the day, even if the day was going to be spent at home.
I didn’t understand it at the time, but now I do. She didn’t want us to feel like lazy bums all day. By getting dressed we were motivated to get outside and do something with ourselves. Because of this habit she created, I still get up and get dressed everyday, unless i am sick in bed

Homemaker’s Dress Code
Put on some real pants.
We are talking abouts some actual pants, not sweats or pj bottoms. I prefer jeans, but I know some women opt for a dress or skirt. Wear whatever you would put on to go out in public. Try switching it up once in a while too. You never know when you will find a new favorite.
Perhaps even shoes.
Now I am a firm believer in going barefoot and not wearing shoes in the house. But slippers or designated inside shoes can be a life saver. I save this for when I need a serious boost of motivation or when I know I will be on my feet all day long. My husband teases me that I wear shoes inside and take them off to go outside.
We aren’t talking about your sloppy clothes.
Unless you are painting or cooking bacon, put on something presentable. If you are really worried about ruining nicer clothing, put an apron over the top. This is a trick that women have used for generations.
Yes, that includes a bra.
I know that they aren’t the most comfortable, but we are needing to trick ourselves into being productive. Plus imagine the teenage boy next door stopped by to offer to mow your lawn. How awkward would that be? It never fails, when I let loose somebody comes by unexpectedly.
Consider this as your work uniform.
Although your work may be keep the home and tending the children, it is important and worth preparing for. In fact, it is some of the most important work you will ever do. So don’t slack. The children will see you do this and develop their own beliefs and habits from it, just like my mom instilled in me.
Why Follow a Homemaker’s Dress Code?
It tricks your brain into being productive.
When you wear your lounge around the house clothes your brain expects to lounge around the house. When you wear your working pants, it expects to get stuff done. It seems silly but it’s very true.
It shows the world that you care.
You set the tone for your family. So even if only your husband and children will see you today, it will show them that you care about your appearance. That will make you more desirable as a wife and a role model to your children. They say that you can’t change the world, but you can change their world.
You just feel better about yourself.
Compare how you feel about yourself in the pj pants from 2012 and the sundress you found at the thrift store. There is a definite difference in how you carry yourself. Take note of that feeling and how people respond to you in each outfit. Remember that and use it as motivation.
There are no awkward moments when the doorbell rings unexpectedly.
We’ve all been there. The doorbell rings and it’s not just the Amazon man. It is an unexpected visitor and you must answer the door. Avoid the awkward arm crossing as you try to talk to them and cover the stain on your shirt or worse. You know what I mean. Following the homemaker’s dress code, will prevent any awkward situations at the door.
You learn to separate rest and work.
Being able to change into your comfy clothing signals to your brain that it is time to rest. This can help you separate work and home when it all blurs together.
