You’ve grown all this garlic, but now what? I can show you how to make homemade garlic powder with the garlic from your very own garden. It takes up less space than freezing or root cellar techniques.

You Can Make That?
Earlier this summer my mom called me up and said that she was thinking of making garlic powder. I had just harvested all of my garlic, but wasn’t sure how I was going to preserve it. She explained that it was just like dehydrating herbs so I decided to give it a try. Armed with a dehydrator and food processor I got to work.

How to Make Homemade Garlic Powder
- First you must peel the garlic. This is the hardest and most tedious part of the entire process of making homemade garlic powder. I highly recommend a garlic peeler as it will make things move faster. Prepare to get sticky.
- Then you must slice or chop the garlic up. Personally, I like using my slap chop for this task, but a good old knife will work too. Chop, but do not mince it.
- Next spread the garlic out on parchment paper. I cut mine to match the rings of the dehydrator. The parchment will prevent it from falling through the holes. Dehydrate on high for about 3 days. You want to make sure it is truly dehydrated to avoid mold.
- Put the dried garlic pieces into the food processor and let it run. Mine took a long time to turn into a powder. You can do it in batches.
- Pour the contents of the bowl through a strainer to sift out the big pieces. Put the big pieces back into the food processor to continue making powder. There were a few very stubborn pieces. I put them in a separate jar to use in soups or roasted meats.
Storing Homemade Garlic Powder
If you have properly dehydrated the garlic then you will be able to store it in a jar on the spice rack just like you would the stuff from the store. You could store your homemade garlic powder in the freezer if you’re worried about mold.
I like to keep my homemade garlic powder in a mason jar in the cabinet. It’s very convenient when I’m cooking that way.
