Ornaments With Scary Teri
We have a family friend that I affectionately call Scary Teri, although she is not and has never been scary. It rhymed and she got stuck with the nickname. She used to host a Christmas party each year for the kids. We got together and she would have 5 Christmas ornaments for us to make. The party got so large that we no longer fit in her home and had to move to an event space.
The ornaments were always super adorable, not those tacky ones that the kids usually make at school. She had everything prepared and organized when we got there. It must have taken her months to get it all ready. We crafted, snacked, and had a great time. By noon we left with 5 ornaments to hang or gift.

Spicing Up Your Homemade Cinnamon Ornaments
You are not limited to cinnamon when making these ornaments. You can add clove, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, ginger, all spice, or apple pie spice. Just add a tablespoon or two of the spice of your choice to the homemade cinnamon ornament dough.
If you use essential oils, then you’ve got even more options. Try adding some orange, clove, nutmeg, ginger, frankincense, or vanilla. You can turn any cinnamon diffuser blend into an ornament.
Homemade Cinnamon Ornament Recipe
Ingredients
¾ cup unsweetened applesauce
4 oz cinnamon
2 tablespoons glue
Instructions
- Mix together ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce, 4 oz cinnamon (one container), and 2 tablespoons glue. Your hands work best for this job. If the dough is dry, add more applesauce.
- Roll the dough out between 2 pieces of parchment paper. The thinner you roll the dough the less time it will take to dry. I aim for ¼”-⅜ inch thick.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes for the ornaments. Make sure to poke a hole at the top with a straw or skewer for the ribbon to go through later.
- Place the ornaments on a parchment lined baking sheet. Put them in the oven at 200 degrees for 2 hours. Flip them over half way through. Another option is to let them air dry for 3-4 days, flipping daily.
- Once they are dry, you can decorate them and tie a ribbon or string to the top. Then hang your homemade cinnamon ornaments on the Christmas tree.
Decorating Homemade Cinnamon Ornaments
Although you do not have to decorate your homemade cinnamon ornaments, it can be done. Paint is the obvious choice when decorating, but puffy paint also works really well. It appears more like icing.
Glitter or glitter glue is also a good option. If you want to add glitter to the entire batch you can mix it into the dough before you bake.
Cookie cutters, handprints, and cookie stamps all work well to make the ornaments.
Use some festive ribbon or kitchen twine to hang the ornaments. They also make great gift toppers.
